Is it just me, or does anyone else find it sad that you need
a special tool to remove this completely?
Many anti-virus have had a removal tool over the years and many still do including but not limited to AVG, Avast! Avira, BitDefender, Norton, Kaspersky, Panda, ESET, F-Secure.
It's sad, nonetheless.
Edit: Most are there incase a normal uninstall goes badly.

I agree with you. It is unfortunate that special tools are needed. In fact, a member of the security community maintains links to info and tools not only for A/V and A/S programs but others as well:
[2] Uninstallers for Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Programs
[3] Uninstallers for Other Programs
[4] Uninstallers for Drivers

I've just reinstall today McAfee 2010 because it was installed over the 2009 version.
I did have to manually uninstall all services & drivers in the "device manager", 'cause even after reboot some were left working. Did finished cleaned up the "temp" folder aswell and some "supportability".dll....
In "system32" folder got to get rid of two old drivers that messed up my firewall engine and had to go in registry tracking those drivers, deleted the keys.
The clean up went very fine and all the drivers reinstall the right way and perform far better now.
Next time might try this tool!:)
