    MSSE Not Updating

    Hello,
I am using MSSE and I noticed that it said that last update was three days ago. I thought this was suppose to update at least once a day. I have windows updates set to fully automatic. Am I missing something? Doesn't Microsoft just update on Tuesdays? Thanks,
    John

MSE will update every time you run a scan, if you tell it to do such. Other than Windows Updates, it is not updated daily, unless you run a scan daily.

Ok, do people normally run daily scans? I'm not opposed to it at all, just wondered. By the way, someone wants to be my friend on here. Is this common practice?

I do, personally, although I'll be honest, I cancel most of them after they start.

It really doesn't take up much resources, so you might as well. Your option, no one can say you should do it a certain way.

    Hi, John.

Yes, MSE will update daily, particularly since you have Windows Update set to Automatic. However, there was a problem with the update server the last few days. During that period of time even clicking the Update link was unsuccessful.

Yes it is common. This is a friendly site. However, if you have not interacted with the person or are uncomfortable for any reason, there is no problem ignoring the request.

Thanks Corrine. Corrine is a security expert, and knows much better than I do.

Only in one area, J_K. You have expertise in areas I'd never go near. :)

You don't want to learn BSODs, Corrine?

No thanks. I'll stick to backdoors, trojans, worms, rootkits, keyloggers, browser hijackers, and the like. In addition to the satisfaction of helping someone recover their computer, what I enjoy most about what I do is (hopefully) teaching the person I help that keeping their computer secure isn't just about an A/V, firewall and MS Security updates but 3rd party software that need to be updated as well.

Thanks for the info. I have noticed on several occasions that it had not been updated for a couple of days. Not just the last few. By the way, Corrine, where do you stand on third party firewalls? I'm using MSSE and Windows 7 firewall with no outbound protection. I am also behind a router firewall with NAT enabled. I tried Zone Alarm free, but I got BSOD. MSSE and ZA don't seem to get along.
