comodo internet security is another free integrated firewall, antivirus, antimalware application that's worked very well for me. I install it on every computer I sell and recommend it to anyone who complains about their current AV.

I have heard a lot of good things about Comodo. I personally think that Windows 7 is pretty darn good right out of the box. I did add MSE because I don't think Windows Defender is enough. MSE disables defender when you install it.

Unless you are an advanced user, I would stay away from Comodo, at least, as your only real-time protection.

As already mentioned, you don't have to pay to get good protection.

During day-to-day usage run as a standard user account. When you need to install something, log-in as admin.
Use [one] software firewall. The in-built Windows Firewall (on by default) is usually good enough.
Use [one] free or paid anti-virus. Panda, MSE, Avira, AVG and Avast! all offer decent free anti-virus.
Run [one or more] anti-malware on-demand at least once a week.
Be careful where you go, click and download.

I've never had a problem with it, so long as I waited to install comodo after all other programs and drivers are installed. The firewall is the only feature I keep active, but that's just my personal preference. You do have a point, as it's very easy to disable internet connectivity and legitimate programs if you choose the wrong options and settings. It doesn't work well with other antimalware/antispyware programs either, unless you disable the defense+ and sandbox features before you run a scan or enable realtime protection. On the other hand, Comodo has never made a computer I've worked with freeze or crash, which is more than I can say for Symantec, McAfee, or Kaspersky, Avira, Avast, malwarebytes or MSE.

What version of Trend Micro are you using? PC Antivirus Reviews website gave Trend Micro a low percentage for 2010. They list what features it has but lacks in protecting.

I am also behind a NAT enabled router with built in firewall. According to GRC Shields Up tests, I don't exist to the outside world. You can check this out at www.grc.comThese are my results. I couln't get the whole screenshot, but all my ports are this way.
having a good firewall / router that blocks INCOMING connections are not
enough, itīs also very important to have a firewall that blocks unwanted OUTGOING connections.

why ?

because if you get some nasty spyware into your computer, then it canīt "call home" after it has stolen your secret information,
like fx. passwords, bank-account information, creditcard-number etc....
