Once again, I'm not concerned that it is running in the background so to speak (Although I have no idea why, I would like to know), I am concerned that there is a malicious form of malware trying to take advantage of it by permanently running it in the background when I haven't even opened it.

I see these two items in running processes ...
C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPSideShowGadget.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe
Added WMPSideShowGadget.exe to the list of strange services here:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/strangeservice.htm
WMPSideShowGadget.exe: This process enables Windows Media Player information to be displayed on a SideShow capable device. Unfortunately, if you have a keyboard, such as the Logitech G15, this gadget installs itself and constantly runs in the background, using about 15MB to 18MB of RAM, even though WMP is not running. You can stop this process by going to Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Windows SideShow -> uncheck all the boxes next to the Windows Media Player gadgets, but leave "Notify me when new gadgets are installed" checked.
Sideshow is used for alot of things including displaying media on external device displays like a Logitech gaming keyboard (g19 or better) with an LCD display.
If you disable Sideshow the media player in the background can be shut down, but your ability to play media in the Logitech LCD display is also gone.

Dave
Thanks for reminder, I reinstalled Task Catcher and blacklisted every .exe in Windows Media Player's directory, I never use it, I prefer The KMPlayer (freeware).
Task Catcher you have to buy for realtime use (cheap), but works great, BillP product, insta closes anything on the blacklist and insta reruns anything whitelisted.
yes I am well aware of Bill P.
I use WinPatrol Plus, have been a subscriber for years. Great Utility
Thanks for the help, guess that solves my problem
