Background - Mind of its own

After setting my custom background with 4 rotating photos they seem to work fine for awhile. Then out of the blue they stop rotating. I go in and check and find that only one photo is selected. I select them all again and nothing. I check again to find only one is selected. I reboot and go in and select them all again. Works for awhile. Sometimes days or sometimes only hours. Then it happens again. ARGH! Please help with any ideas.
