You can try rebuilding the icon cache:

    Icon Cache - Rebuild

Or you can try sfc /scannow which you would type on the command prompt which should launch system file checker. But this will remove My Colors theme.

Actually there are three best possible alternatives to bring the default icons back . These are ....

    1. Laborious process .... Icons - Change Using Resource Hacker .... and you need the appropriate icons to use .

    2. Comparatively easier ... change the imageres.dll files in System32 and syswow64 with the files of the same build . If yours is SP1, I or anybody else can supply it to you .

    3. Easiest way .... Repair Install .... you just need the installer disk .

If any type of further assistance (like the system icons for first option, system files for the second option) is required , dont hesitate to ask . But Repair Install will solve the issue rightly .

Rebuilding Icon Cache is not able to solve this issue , coz your system icons are messed up bu using stardock's application. Look at post #3 .... there are only a few tricks that can work that I posted in it .

Icon group 163 (shortcut overlay) is changed by icon group 161 ; 36 (windows disk) is replaced by 35 and 32 (hard disk) is replaced by 31 . Rebuilding icon cache will give exactly the same result ... as the change took place permanently. You are either to replace imageres files from outside, or to edit imageres files or to repair your installation, as posted in post #3 .
