ok i have 64 bit so do i edit explorer exe in system32 or in syswow64?
explorer.exe in 32bit is just located in "C:\windows" I gather it would be located in the same directory in x64 but dont quote me on that.

Are you sure you replaced the original or did it just rename it to explorer1.exe?

When you save it you need to open task manager and kill explorer and then save, that way it wont be in use and can be overwritten.

Restorator is very easy to use, open the program and then just drag and drop the dll you want to open on the left pane and then you have a directory and you should be able to click on the Bitmap directory and and it will expand and then if you click on an individual bitmap in the left pane it will show a preview in the right pane, to replace one the resources simply drag the image you want to replace on to the corresponding image in the left pane.

Once you have made a successful change you will see a small arrow on the changed resource and the image in the right pane should now be the image you replaced.

To save the dll you will need to take ownership of it and make sure it's not in use, so you will need to kill explorer before you save, otherwise it will automatically give the dll a new file name with a 1 on the end.

I am sure the only one you need to alter is the one in c:\Windows so if you have saved correctly and verified it after and you still don't see any changes then possibly you have not changed the corresponding image that relates to your Taskbar position or you may need to log off and log on again for the changes to apply, although the second one should not be the case.

Update, I just tried it and you are correct, the one in SysWOW64 doesn't do anything and the one in c:\Windows is the one you need to change.
