Unable to Change Desktop Background on Windows 7 Premium 32bit

I cannot change my desktop background on my laptop. I can only change them to the solid colors. The window's color and the screen saver changes but the desktop background does not. I have already made sure that the "Remove background images (where available)" is unchecked. Please help. Thanks

I am sorry, I re-read the title. my mistake. I guess I was tired.

Try an sfc /scannow command: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Any ideas as to what might have caused this?

    Try this:

Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
    1. In the search box, type display, and then click Display.
    2. In the left pane, click Change color scheme.
    3. In the Color scheme list, click Windows Classic, and then click Apply.
In the Color scheme list, click Windows 7 Basic, and then click OK.

This will restore the original background (hopefully). Then change the background image (see if you can). Then change it back to the theme you like best, perhaps aero. See if it is because an aero theme is selected that is causing the problem. You might have a corrupted background image, we can try to fix that after you get back to me (found here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...3-4f0c7dd70d13)

    harrison,

You are just simply trying to change the desktop? Have you ever done any registry editing or disabled services? The Themes service must be set to automatic and started. Check it in the services.msc to see if it says both. You have Win7 set to use aero themes, right?:

Can you post a picture of what it displays so I can see what is wrong? Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

Have you indeed tried all of my suggestions? If not, which haven't you?

First I would try this. Navigate to:

    C:\users\(User name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\TranscodedWallpaper.jpg

And delete TranscodedWallpaper.jpg . See if that fixes it. If not...

I have posted a workaround before. It is not a fix for the original issue, but so far has always allowed people to apply a background wallpaper.

Download Irfanview and install it (it is a very useful and worthwhile program in itself. It is my default program for images). Once installed, run Irfanview. Open the desired image and choose from menu at top left

    Options> Set as wallpaper> Centered
