Desktop Windows Manager Session Manager service can't start or crashes

    Hi There,

I have started getting this message "desktop windows manager has stopped working" a few weeks ago and since then I can't use the Aero desktop properly.
When I tried to open the Services in device manager they wouldn't open and I followed a few links and tries to solve the issue. After a few hours I managed to open Services but still can't start the Desktop Windows Manager Session Manager service. I set up the service to manual instead of automatic to stop getting the error message on Windows Start Up.
Also, when I try the DXdiag session the diagnostics also screams that something is wrong.

Please help. I really don't want to reinstall Windows all over again.
    Thanks,
    D

Welcome to Seven Forums kzustang. Since you are having multiple issues, and have tried some things, let's jump straight to the System File Checker

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

See if it finds and corrects any issues. If it finds issues, but says it cannot correct them, attach a copy of the sfcdetails.txt to your next post as per Option Three of the tutorial.

Also confirm you have an up to date driver for your video card, and no yellow exclamation points in Device Manager. See if you can run the WEI assessment as well

Windows Experience Index - Update or Refresh Score

    OK,

    Thanks for the help.
I attached the log file as you requested. There are files which cannot be repaired during the sfc \scannow procedure.
All drivers are up-to-date. No yellow marks in device manager. And my rating is 4.7 due to graphics which is the lowest.

    Thanks again,
doing the readiness tool now too....

Oy, you have a bunch of issues. Did you run SFC multiple times as suggested in the tutorial? I requested more help for you as I want to see if anyone has any suggestions beyond a Repair Install. Do you have the windows dvd if necessary? Hang in there, let's see what the others suggest. . A Guy

Check for infection first since it may not repair if heavily infected. Install, update and run a full Malwarebytes
scan in Safe Mode if necessary. If it won't run Download Windows Defender Offline, burn to CD with Windows Image burner, boot and run a full scan.

Then run SFC /SCANNOW Command up to 3 separate times to see if it will repair the damaged files. If not consider a Repair Install.

We can fix those, and see if that helps - you should probably also run a CheckSUR scan which may point out some other problems..

Please downloadand save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need tolook in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft DownloadCenter)

Run it - The toolcan take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install')depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear tofreeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result islogged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip theCheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

I'll post the fix protocol for the known problems a little later.
