One thing occurred to me: could it have anything to do with some kind of incompatibility with UxStyle? Should I have installed Universal Theme Patcher instead?

It worth a try, uninstall UxStyle, reboot then try Universal Theme Patcher.

I uninstalled UxStyle, restarted and installed the Universal Theme Patcher, restarted again, uninstalled Theme Resource Changer, restarted yet again. It seems to be partly working, and actually now I think it was partly working before as well. The images in Shell32.dll seem to be being used, although I don't know what 634 and 635 are supposed to be. But the images in explorer.exe and the button icons in explorerframe.dll are not showing up.

635 is the top of Control Panel.

I get all 3 that work. I am out of ideas.
