After saving to a name called themetest1 and also as default-- just to see if that did anything-- no change.

And the Apply button is still inactive.

Currently the Aero theme is on here. That won't open up screen color either-- the thing I wanted to get to is the slider which controls brightness of the background within Win7.

Is there an alternate to that? Simply put, there is no adjustment. How can the bad or inactive
screen themes be deleted to get back to a default?

Windows Color and Appearance only works on Classic theme not Aero. You can right click on a theme in the save box and chose delete.

    Explain better.

    Might this be the solution?

Window Color and Appearance - Enable or Disable Change

Describes a couple of downloads to turn on or turn off changing appearance.
I have certainly not made any request to the program to turn things off. I'm wondering if this is a way to get the Apply button working.

I found the Sevenforums tutorial on enable or disable color and appearance and thought I
addressed that by a followup here. That message does not appear so my update is:

I ran the troubleshooter for all this after attempting to install Enable appearence in the registry from Sevenforums, Win7 scanned my video and said I need an updated driver for anything to work.

Elsewhere I did look for the Radeon Driver through the Motherboard site.

I have the driver number but the download did not want to complete. I asked assistance from support staff to give a direct link. How complicated can that be? Anyway, no updated driver is received.

    The driver is called

    13-9-legacy_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe

    for an MSI motherboard.

That's where I am: hung up until I can do this upgrade.

    Some progress.

I have been able to open up the advanced controls under Personalization > Screen color
by using the Sevenforums link and instructions for the register entry to allow changes in Appearance
and that has to be done under Aero screen option.

I also had to update my ATI Radeon driver to win7 x64 and that is described above. I was not able to
do this without getting Catalyst back but I can take care of that later.

Not ready to mark solved yet until I know all the options work.

One note on hardware: I think I'm at the limit of this old screen where it's physical adjustment buttons and the Appearance slider do not make much change. But I'm still playing with that.

I've done everything I can to open up the text change box to apply.

Change colors will now change colors. I have a solid background now and within the Aero theme yet.

This is what's maddening: if you select Windows Classic as I initially did the fonts, spacing appearance all that open up and Apply worked (past tense.) Now I don't even know how I can get back there which is what I wanted to do.

Why is there no relation between the two areas of one screen of selections? Why should selecting one thing lock out anything else?

Here's what's left to do: There is a shadow on the lettering which makes it hard to read. In Aero,
would this be an adjustment under fonts or something I have not seen nor can I find by any method elsewhere other than "Personalization"?

    Thanks Jerry,

Yes this is a very good tutorial and more complete than what I was going to post here that I found
    between these visits.

I also want to group the downloadable registry entries I found including restore the defaults, ( though
now I want to save what I have and spruce that up.)

Still, I'll want to print the tutorial and others to paper for the day when I lose something
and forget how it was done.

One Question: is there a pinned source/ sticky with all or most of the registry downloads
perhaps grouped by subject? These are valuable.

I got the shadows off. My font _size_ is still a bit small on the desktop and I did not see it listed in that
Appearance grouping. And as discussed, the Windows Classic font dialog is unavailable when in Aero.

    Progress has been made.
