2 HDD's one with XP, one with Windows 7 will it cause problems?

Hi.

I currently have Windows XP on a 500GB drive and want to leave intact in case I need to go back to it.

I intend to a clean install of Windows 7 on to a 2nd new, unused drive ~ 1 TB.

My question is, with both HHD's fitted to the same PC, how do I ensure that it is the Windows 7 drive which always boots?

Would like to view the contents of the XP drive occasionaly from Windows 7.

No,
the rule of thumb is always install older windows first,
as the newer version will see it and include it in the boot loader..

YOu'll see it always say,

Boot earlier version of windows
Boot windows 7

You can ofcourse change how long it displays that message, defualt is key pressed or 30seconds.

1) Remove XP HD.
2) Fit your New HD & install Windows 7.
3) When you have install Windows 7 & working OK. post back.

When you have separate HD's for each OS it is much better to boot via BIOS instead of configuring a windows-managed Dual Boot. This keeps the HD's independent to come and go as you please.

So when ready to reinstall Win7, unplug the XP HD and swap the cable to Win7 HD or set it first to boot in BIOS setup.

Then after install, plug back in the XP HD and boot it using the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key which every computer or mobo has:
Asus - F8
HP/Compaq - Esc
Sony - F2
Acer - F12
Gateway - F10
eMachnes - F10
Toshiba - F12
Dell - F12
IBM/Lenovo - the blue Thinkvantage button
