Most of you predate me by a decade then at the least. HA! I started on Windows 3.1 and I'm happy to say that while I remember 14.4 modems and 5 1/4 floppies, most of what you guys speak of is gibberish. It's like telling a man with a steel knife that you use to cut meat with sharp rocks.

Steven Brust writes a wonderful fantasy series that begins with the book Jhereg. It's about an assasin's life in a fantasy setting and is a fun, action filled ride. I highly reccomend the series to anyone who likes witty humor and swashbuckling adventure.

Used these in Grade Ten...LOLOL I never took up computers though until later in life.

256GB... ...the largest I have is a 32GB

3350's weren't they the removable ones? I remember an operator removing one while it was still rotating, the interlock failed. It threw him across the room.


On second thoughts that might have been 3330

3330's and older 2314's had an external "Goldfish bowl" like case and were loaded on to the IBM mainframe via opening a drawer, putting the assembly on to the spindle and REVERSE unscrewing the case to remove the outer assembly.

3350's from what I remember were fixed mounted (i.e non removable) drives.

At least it shows I'm not the oldest guy on these boards if people can still remember that hardware.

2314, 3330 & 3340 used removable disk packs, 3350 used fixed.

The 3340 introduced "Winchester" technology which was used throughout the industry for many years. It was called Winchester because it had 2 30M spindles, hence 30-30 like the rifle with the same name.

I used punch cards in an RPGII Programming class in college around 1977 or so. When I worked at IBM, we used punch cards to input manufacturing data well into the 80's.

Oh yes, that was all the IBM 470 and later the /650 would take. And we played reaction games with the 011 punch. It was fun when you dropped a box of 2000 with a program in there.

In fact it's good to display this stuff sometimes

Then at least you "Youngsters" can appreciate Modern Hardware-- and you would be totally amazed in how far the hardware and Software has progressed in even 30 years.

If those guys at Bletchly had had even the humblest laptop available for decoding the Enigma Machine --well.

(However if the OTHER side had had that technology too -- best not to think of THOSE consequences).
