42 INCH LED TV or 42 INCH Computer Monitor , for GAMING & MOVIES ....

I am planning on buying a 42 inch screen , to be used with my RIG via HDMI.I am using a 32 inch , SHARP LED/LCD T.V.Which has issues , like flickering lines which have been appearing for long now.

So,i am just gonna use this a television for my room.

Now,i have to decide weather to go with a regular 42 inch LED T.V or go with a 42 inch Computer monitor.
I like to play games and watch movies on big screen.So,which one will be the best choice for heavy gaming (like with max settings) and heavy Video watching like watching movies in 1080p quality..

I know that , sitting close to my 32 inch monitor makes the pixels visible , when watching 720p movies.So,i now watch movies in 1080p..

However , playing games does not show any problems.I can play games on MAX and no lag..

I wonder what will happen with a 42 inch screen.

That is why , i want to decide which one (either a T.V or a Computer monitor) will give the best quality..

I have experienced gaming on a TV (We have a 32-inch LG TV). It's horrible at 720P and even worse at 1080P (Things are too small). Anyways, as long as you're used to playing on a TV and has a minimum of 60hz refresh rate I think it's good.

Given the option, I would say a Monitor for gaming and a TV for movies. I have 3 27" monitors, so I use them for both. I am satisfied with movies on my monitor at 1080P. I have a 55" Smart TV and the movies are better on it, but not so much that I hesitate to watch on my monitor. I get a good experience with monitors. Maybe it's just me, but I have found gaming on a monitor much better than on a TV. I know a lot of people will disagree, but that just my experience.

I haven't done any serious research into this, but I believe you're going to see a significant price difference between HDTVs and monitors of the same size (with monitors being much more expensive).

My one experience computing with an HDTV was not great, but FWIW it was an entry-level model. It's likely that higher-end HDTVs in the same price range as monitors of the same size are a very different experience.

Yea it's sort of hit and miss but mostly Hz matters
Most large screen t.v.'s have lousy Hz
I have a "now older" 40" Sony bravia 120Hz so it does pretty well
But ultimately if you want to step up to big screens you have at the least have a 4gb gpu and a t.v. that has a higher Hz or refresh rate otherwise it will not do anything positive.

TV screens make for a horrible computer monitor.

HDTV`s are meant for just that HDTV broadcasts, and of course movies and games on the PS3 or PS4 look amazing on a HDTV

If you are gonna use it for the pc, then get the monitor.

As far as I know a HDTV has its own built in tuner, a monitor does not, the pc does all the work.

I don't have cable or even own a TV, but I've done setup for others. AFAIK the tuner is only involved if you connect the coax cable (the "cable cable" ) to the TV. But in many (most? all?) cases that means an analog signal. For my mom's cable service & HDTV, it was necessary to use a converter box with HDMI output to the TV to actually get an HD picture.* And in that case the "tuning" is done through the converter box.

In my [only moderately informed] opinion it comes down to the specs of the display, which is also probably the basis of the price differential between commodity HDTVs (ie. entry to mid-level) and monitors of similar size.

* For the record the converter box also has coax output, but I believe it was only intended for non-HDTVs.

An HDTV with its own tuner will broadcast HDTV from the air with just an antenna.

The only reason a box is involved is so you can get all the channels you want from your cable company.

You do not have to have a box, your HDTV will broadcast any channel it can grab, whether HD or not.

Your last sentence is absolutely correct.

But we are getting off topic.

But my point is, if he will use it strictly for the PC and never use it for a tv, just get a monitor, it should be cheaper, maybe, with the high price of a good monitor who knows :huh:

Why don't you just go for something real high quality?

Go for 144Hz Monitor not sure about the size or go for something like a 4K UHD Monitor. Don't buy LED TV for Gaming if your planning to hook it up with a PC. Monitors tend to have crisp results and best results on their Native Resolution and has more pixel density and much better contrast ratio and modern gaming monitors have a lot of features like 2x HDMI ports, sometimes built-in speakers and ports for using a regular headsets or earphones.

I too think that Monitor is a better choice..BUT

here is the thing , guys.Monitors are very expensive compared to Led T.V's.I can get a 32 or even 40 Inch led T.V with the same price of a say, 24 or 27 Inch Monitor..

The price difference is big.I currently have tried playing all the latest games.I watch my movies in 1080p and even YouTube videos with 1080p60fps or even 1440p works and looks fine.

Even though i have an old SHARP 32 inch AQUEOUS Led T.V with HDMI.However i have been having this weird screen issue where several transparent lines start flickering om the screen from time to time.

At first I thought,it was the HDMI cable.But it wasn't as i used my Laptop on this T.V and the lines returned.

I will have to pay some amount at the Sharp Service Center to fix this.My T.V warranty is finished.

But as i said,the monitors are expensive.And i do not have any LAG issues.I always use Fraps prior to playing games properly and i am getting sometimes 60fps, sometimes 50fps and sometimes even less as i have a mid range Nvidia Graphics Card i.e Nvidia GTx 960 2GB Graphics Card with 16 GB ram.

Monitors are very expensive compared to Led T.V's.

That's what I've been saying from the beginning. But keep in mind that you get what you pay for; that price differential is not arbitrary. If you do opt for a TV, you will need to do your homework. Read as many professional and customer reviews as possible WRT a particular model's suitability as a monitor. If you don't find any such reviews on a particular model, it's safer to assume it's not a good choice than to assume it is.

Yes with the price of tv`s coming down a bigger PC monitor would be more expensive.

This is mine and the price fluctuates a lot, and the lowest I`ve ever seen it was $349 and shooting up to $549. It`s only 24" so I`d imagine bigger would be more expensive.

This is a great monitor and right now it`s at its lowest price I`ve ever seen it.

For a large computer monitor I would go 27" IPS. TVs are different beasts as far as I'm concerned. I'm still trying to find a really good 65" TV that I don't need to pay $5k for.
