'5D' discs can store data until well after the sun burns out

Lady Fitzgerald # 8 & #18

I will never understand the way some computer types (and now ladies, it seems) insist in turning light-hearted, anecdotical discussions about the use of technology into flaming wars, personal agression and claims that only morons do things differently from them.

Your suggestions that "I want to live in the past", "be bound to my fragile, vulnerable possessions", that I'm "sadly mistaken" or that it is "my fault" if I can't read old floppies anymore are downright insulting, condescending, and have no place in a civilised conversation of any sort.
Just so you know Clairvaux, I share your reaction--I suppose only the mods can tell us why this person gets away with these sorts of posts here.

I salute you for your love of books, and envy your collection. We recently acquired a 2nd home which not only has a library, but the now-elderly folks who had lived there asked us if they could leave the books, and needless to say we were more than thrilled. I have a few Kindles and there's no comparison to the joy/experience of "real" whether hardcover or paperback.

We also are fanatics about scanning and archiving personal documents, and indeed I have every piece of paper we have ever touched on my smartphone as a result. Impressed a friend of mine once at lunch by calling-up an old W-2 in just seconds, from 1970. In the U.S. we do need to keep hardcopy of tax papers for at least 5 years, and home purchase docs "forever", but apart from these we save nothing of paper files whatsoever.
