"Windows Easy Transfer is unable to continue. Please reboot ..."

WET fails on the "old" computer (Windows 7 Professional laptop, 32 bit), while checking what can be transferred.

I'm trying to transfer via USB drive, running as Administrator, after a clean boot.

The only Event Viewer message after WET start is "The Multimedia Class Scheduler service entered the running state."

What else can I look at, what else can I try, or how can I perform the same transfers manually ?

Notes:

1. I'm mainly interested in transferring settings and customizations

2. The eventual "new" computer is Windows 7 Enterprise laptop, 64 bit

3. Three years ago I successfully used WET to transfer from XP to the (now) "old" Windows 7 laptop

Thanks in advance for any help.

You could try disabling everything on the old computer via msconfig, Startup and Services tabs.

This is a good tutorial on using msconfig in Windows 7: How to use msconfig in Windows 7

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.

Click on the Services tab.
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.

Now try WET, see what happens.

Otherwise, can you connect them through a router then tell WET to use that instead of using a USB flash drive?

I would not transfer settings as they are a corruption path into a fresh install. Better to start fresh.

WET also fails regularly so it's not as reliable as dragging the active User folders to backup and then copying their contents into the corresponding folders after reinstall.

Ztruker, thanks so much for your quick reply.

I have tried Disable All on the msconfig -> Services without success, but will also try your msconfig -> Startup suggestion.

As for your helpful router suggestion, I thought USB might be simpler when WET was unable to connect the two machines on our corporate network.

Gregrocker, thanks for your quick response.

Can you tell me any specific items that your method avoids vs. WET ?

WET does not work. If and when on the rare occasion it does work it ends up leaving unintended consequences.

These systems, IMHO, have never worked as intended.

If you use WET your files can be stuck inside it and irretrievable. We never hear anything about WET here except problems.

Since your stated goal is to transfer settings, from the point of view of a Clean Reinstaller transferring settings is a frequent corruption path vs. starting fresh which is the point of a reinstall.

If you are not reinstalling and will have the original install as backup then you can try it as long as you're aware of the drawbacks.

Thanks for the info, gregrocker - in fact i am trying to transfer from 32 bit Win7 to 64 bit Win7, not re-installing.

Ztrucker, unfortunately your helpful suggestions did not seem to make any difference in my problem.

Is anyone aware of any way to enable logging or verbose mode or any command line switches for WET / migwiz ?

Ok you have gotten 2 responses, one from a long time and very knowledgable Seven Forums user, Greg, that WET DOES NOT WORK. These transfer programs have never worked correctly.

So my question to you is Why are you still trying to use it?

edwar, I'm still trying to use WET because it worked great for me 3 years ago and because i'm a little stubborn and enjoy a challenge

The setuperr.log file in the C:\Users\lhh995\AppData\Local\MigWiz folder contains the following:

Does anyone know of a tool that will indicate why my user profile is (allegedly) invalid ?

I know this is a dead thread, but I still use WET and it's great (when it works). This error, in my experience, is caused by old profiles that no longer have a valid AD account attached to them.

If you go into the Advanced System Settings and click on the User Profiles dialogue and remove any "ACCOUNT UNKNOWN" accounts it should work.

:D

I'm nor sure if it will work, but give it a try.
As in the report says that "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." create another user, log in with it and try to save the info from your profile. Don't forget to disable the Antivirus.
