Hi all,
I have a brand new and legal Microsoft copy of Windows Ultimate x64 installed. I am about to activate it but over the past week or so, every few days at the very first startup for the day, the OS starts and when it gets to the Windows logo with the "Starting Windows" phrase, the "Starting Windows" changes to a message informing me that the registry is being updated. The system then goes on to continue starting and runs perfectly well from there on.

My network is protected by an enterprise level security solution and no illegal or cracked software is running on any system on the network.

What are your recommendations? Perform a full reinstall or go ahead an activate?

Thanks for your suggestions.

I've seen that message when doing the initial install. I don't remember seeing it very often after that though. A Windows update maybe?

Hi back, yes, I considered that as a possibility since it is eratic and always happens at the first startup of a morning.

If it is Windows update it should stop being so often once Windows catches up with all the updates. You can go ahead and activate, you shouldn't have any problems activating again if you have to reinstall. I've reinstalled and reactivated 3 or 4 times in a year, for one reason or another, with no problems. Using the same product code on the same hardware (PC) over and over shouldn't be an issue. Is this your personal PC or a work supplied PC? I only ask because of your reference to using an "enterprise level security solution". Maybe that's what's doing it.

Hi guys,
My PC is on my own private network at home. I use an enterprise level security solution because at the time, some 5 years ago, I needed to cover systems running Windows 2003 Server Enterprise and Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security Advanced, though expensive at the time, was and still is very effective. I've never been infected in the whole time I've used it.

Your win updates are probably set to automatic. I set mine to Download & let me choose when to install.

So you are probably seeing this on various reboots when it has automatically updated.

Hi all,
All of you have been very helpful, thank you. I wondered if the update angle was going to be it as well. When I did my diplomas, it was suggested that we don't rely on Microsoft to do everything, I don't know why I changed my update settings, I used to use the Doc's setting with XP, back we go.

Regards,
John
