A quick query

I have my son's machine as he does want it now and after a memtest I am left in a dilemma because tow of the sticks (of 4) have tested up with errors.

Now I cannot quite work out from the Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD7 manual which two slots to use with two sticks. I was always under the impression that one used 1 & 3 slots counting away for the CPU or 2 & 4 like my other desktop with an Asus board.

Now as you can see in the pic there are two versions of doing this unless I am frankly not getting it - one says DDR3_1 and DDR2_2 for the (blue) slots for two sticks yet the diagram shows DDR_1 & DDR3_3 for the slots (one blue and one white).

Any help would be really appreciated.

The way I read the info is that you should use the same coloured slots if only using 2 memory modules. If you look at the Rectangle on the Right in your screen shot, IE Dual Memory Configuration Table, it shows for dual memory configuration using slots DDR3 1 & DDR3 2, which are the 2 slots closest to the CPU.

Yep that is what I was thinking too and yet the orange box shows channel 0 shows DDR_1 and DDR3_3 so confusing but I shall go with the blue slots first and using 1 & 3 I don't think will actually damage the machine.

Ok the memtest has just finished all good so will find out soon enough - thanks for the reply Ranger.

Thanks Ranger have used both configurations and the 1&2 seem to be quicker to boot than 1&3 so I guess what you aid was the right config.

Oh and I found another little issue a bonus MBAM not playing nicely with my Kaspersky - have come across that before when the full version was given away free so I am betting the free trial is doing the same but all the same something to note for anyone who uses Kaspersky and is using MBAM eh??

In my opinion if your motherboard is dual channel and you show dual channel then you have the ram in the proper slots.
In the process of using CPU-Z on my older system I discovered that the system went from Quad channel to Triple channel. After some checking I discovered another stick of (G-Skill) went bad in the #1 slot. That make 3 out of 8 sticks of G-Skill that has went bad. I changed it with a backup stick of ram and I'm back to Quad channel.

Now I got to just find a deal on some Corsair Ram and replace all the G-Skill.

Yes Jack it is dual channel it is just the way they have it set up so that I have two sticks of G Skill 1600 in the blue slots and from what I can read unganged means that the two channels are being used and on this board the channels so happen to be in the blue slots which are next to each other.
According to this Ganged or Unganged - Memory - Toms Hardware this confusion for want of a better term comes about from using the AMD Phenom CPU

For example the slots counting away form the CPU are 1&2 - blue and 3&4 - white and using the blue slots is making it unganged again apparently gives it an edge over ganged channels.

Why they have to make things so darn complicated is very frustrating and to add to the issue clocking the RAM on this board is difficult for me because of the legacy BIOS which for me has always been a nightmare to use because of all the abbreviations one has to keep on looking up find what they mean before even thinking of changing anything .
