Plus there are always Easter Eggs you're not likely to find out about unless you read the tutorial forums, and tech tips shows like Leo LaPorte, Patrick Norton etc..

Pressing keys "to see what would happen" is how those guys find out what does what.

How true, must be one of the best forums for good advice.

My tendency to read the manual before doing anything took a knock yesterday when a new CD/Receiver arrived and I just connected it up and switched on - oops - only resorting to the instructions to set up a timer. But it was good I did look since I found out that there were limitations as to the number of files on USB devices. :huh:

I have the approach that there is always something to learn from whatever source but preferably a reliable one and even better when it is free - also, we do have libraries - so if you want to look at that expensive book then order it from a library. That is how I read so many.

I understand why some would like a book, but I like poking around in new versions of windows till I know it through and through.

I'm completely self tought when it comes to computer, and I think that's part of the fun.

I remember when I was like 8 my dad brought me home a box full of computer bits and wanted me to built a computer. I thought it was christmas and my birthday all rolled into one!

Ill admit I'm very much a hardware person than software, but I do like to solve things. I make sure I read like every BSOD post just so it goes into my vast mess of computer guff in my noodle

When I bought my new computer with WIN7 I immediately bought a 7 bible. It turns out that after using XP for 6 years I already know enough to use 7. Reading the book didn't show me much I don't already know. I get better info on line.

I used to buy lot of books and magazines on computing and other topics before 2000. After I got used to internet, I stopped buying. Now I collect lots of free e-books and any doubts, I get answers from Internet.

Most of the books repeat basic information on windows 7. Websites and Forums give lots of specialized information which is hard to find in books.

Now my bedtime companion, used to be a book, replaced by iPod (in future by a tablet).
