Hi -

In copying files from external drive (xp files) I received a lot of access denied errors on open. I right clicked on drive, and some subsequent folders, and took ownership, and set up full control permissions for admin group (as I am admin). STill got errors on some of the files. They are not encrypted, but the types of files tath I got erros on are - example,

PDF, XLS, DOC, ZIP, TXT, INI, DAT, CFG, and other assorted propietrary formats.

I cannot seem to copy these files. How can I do it - and what doesn't win 7 like?

Is the external drive a USB stick, is it a USB drive?

tiger2 you're going to have to us more info than your first post.
Did you buy a Windows 7 DVD? Did you do a "Clean install"?

The external drive is a Western Digial My Book USB drve, formatted as NTFS, which I have been using as a backup device on my older XP machine. I use a utility, Second Copy on XP, to copy off files as they change.

My new Win 7 machine, win 7 pro, is only about a month old (it's a Sager laptop), and I have just now gotten around to copying my data files to my new machine. I started using Second Copy to copy them off - but I was getting these access errors - so I started trying to copy them myself by hand, to see if I gott he same errors, and I do.

What else would be helpful to know/

Tiger,

The easy way is to copy the files, while on the XP, to a FAT32 partition.

That way you shed all of that ntfs permission stuff.

What's the chance that you have another external usb on which you can crfeate a fat32 partititon or can create another partition on your present usb?

One way to create the partitions you need is to boot from a Partition Wizard (NOT partition magic) CD.

Take a gander at this tutorial:
Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD
