Accessing What Password Is From Router ?

Hello,

Trying to help son out with this.
Other complication is that I am not very sharp re Routers.
Routers have always been above my IQ level.

Son has a typical G type of LinkSys Router in house.
Was set up by a neighbor who is no longer in area.

Works fine, but was apparently set up with a Password.

Son now has a new iPod that won't connect, as it considers it a "Locked" network, apparently, due to the Password set on it. Does find the network, though.

No jottings down of password, and neighbor no longer around.

Any way of accessing directly from the router what the password might be ?
If so, would sure appreciate how to go about it, in real detail.

Really don't want to advise him to change the Password, as everything works
for him and wife accessing it for their internet, and if it ain't broken...

on the back of the router you will typically find a small hole that contains the reset switch...use a pin to reset the router to its default settings... username..admin .. password...admin.. hope this helps..

What a great Forum.

My son and his wife both access the Router now just fine on their respective PC's.
My sons desktop is hard-wired to the router, and his wife uses it in the wireless mode.

Apparently, they both have the Password set correctly, presumably by the chap that configured the Router initially.

Question: If they both do the "admin and admin" reset as suggested, will they have to reset something in their respective Control Panels (or...?), or is W7 smart enough to recognize that the Router now has no Password set, and will still connect without their having to do anything ?

Or, will they both have to, somewhere on their PC's, reset to admin-admin ?
If so, exactly what and where, please ?
(both, and me, are very "non-technical".

No. Nothing will have to reset. Unless of course the chap set up static IP's on them, which I doubt. So they should be able to connect without having to do anything. The ipod as well will be able to connect.

However, all your neighbors and anyone else who picks up your wireless will be able to connect to your router. This is a security issue. You will need to setup a password on the router again.

well.... you'd need to type URL 192.168.1.1 in your web browser that would open router configuration page ....first then enter admin....admin to go to settings

and after reset.....you might have to enter your user name and password provided by the ISP though from the drop-down menu labeled "WAN Connection Type." The connection type you need will depend on the information you receive from your ISP.

If you don't know the password to log into the router you will have to re-set it to defaults to gain access to the routers settings. If you do re-set it to defaults you will loose your current wireless password that was stored in the routers settings. The defaults are no password and no encryption. Your network will be un-secured and wide open to anybody within rang. If you do re-set it immediately log in and set an administrator password. Then go in and lock down your wireless, I would recommend using WPA2 if possible. Avoid WEP like the plague.
