Adding files to folders

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and hope I'm posting this in the right section.
I've just given up with XP and am trying to configure W7.
With XP if I added files to folders they would stay at the bottom of the list so that I could rename them to suit the existing file names. With W7 when I add files they land at the bottom of the list but then are automatically shifted to their logical position in the list before I have time to chose a name.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening? So far I have not seen any way to alter this unwanted behaviour.

Regards to all, Jonathan

Hello mindthetrams, welcome to Seven Forums

I don't get that. On my Windows, new file items are added to the bottom, and remain there until the Window is refreshed.

None-the-less, if you wish to see your most recently added files together, then just click on Date Modified in the right-hand pane of Explorer, and your file items will be sorted by date order. In this way, items will be grouped by date/time even when changing file names.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your reply. I'll give that a try. I don't understand this problem as it wasn't happening in XP and you don't have it. Are there any settings that could be checked? Sorting by date means that all my alphabetical files are mixed up and it's very difficult to find what the next logical name for each new file should be to preserve order Eg. "Jerry a17" (my cat) The next new image should be "Jerry a18" but with the names mixed up it's going to take all day to make sure I name new files sensibly.

One very definite way is to change filename before moving by prefixing Z to the existing name. Three mouse clicks & one keyboard click and guaranteed the file will be at the bottom until you want to change the name.

I think you need to familiarize with how the Windows 7 explorer works. You can right click in a folder's whitespace and sort or group by several properties. You can also right click a whitespace in a folder, chose properties and change the type of folder for the types of files you have.

Thank you Art, that's a good idea. Do you have the same problem when adding things to folders?

Thank you to those members who offered advice.
I think I have found the partial solution to this problem elsewhere on this forum.

Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable
It seems that I was looking for something I didn't have. I can now disable auto arrange.

My preferred view in folders is "details" and this has not been helped as auto arrange is greyed out.

So I have had partial success in wresting control of my files from Mr Gates and his crew.

Why Microsoft would decide on our behalf to withold this ability is beyond me.

I am pleased to have found this forum and look forward to trying to keeping up with events in the W7 world.

Regards to all Jonathan

Mr. Gates retired as CEO about 15 years ago.

You can arrange them by name, type, size, date or date modified, and any of them in reverse. Under Choose Details, you can have more ways to arrange them. I don't see a problem.

My problem is that when I started to use W7 I found that I could not stop items being auto-arranged. This is a problem partly solved by downloading the file on this forum to partly enable control of "auto-arrange".
I drag and rename files into folders and find the auto-arrange interferes badly with this proccess.
The standard options of arranging files is familier to me but auto-arrange relentlessly interferes in what I am doing.
My problem now is that I still cannot control auto-arrange in my preferred "details" view and since running the downloaded file I find the proccess of placing files in folders locks up the computer and I have returned to XP for certain types of work.
If you can advise me further I would be grateful.
Regards Jonathan.

Put a number in front of each name in the order you want it. Or try Win8 or 10 or Linux.
