after critical update, programs wont respond

My computer did a critical update last night, went to MS its own and did it.
Now it runs very slow, and most programs wont respond at all?

Using a clean boot lets see if we can identify the culprit
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
If not, go back with a system restore to before the update and report back.
