alot removal

I downloaded what I thought was paint.net and founf myself with this horror called alot appbar that has taken over from Google.

Have uninstalled it in Control Panel and looked for anything in the regedit - nothing but it keeps coming back.

Am pretty cranky as I have just set this machine up as a dual boot and I think the only way I can get rid of it is to wipe the HDD again and start from scratch - unless anyone knows of how to get rid of it please?.

ON IE 9 click the tools in top right corner then "Manage add ons".

Click Toolbars and extensions tab. Highlight if listed then disable and delete.

If not under Toolbar tab click "Search providers" tab if listed highlight then disable and delete.

Tricky suckers like to hide that junk.

Chrome is similar. It will be listed under Search or Toolbars.
FF and Opera I have no idea.

That is how I had to get rid of one that snuck in on me.

Let me know if you find it there.

You may need to open Task Manager and kill the process first then delete. Everything listed alot.

Hiyya Hoppy haven't seen you around for a bit - nice to hear from you again.

Mate I put Google back in as the Home page > applied > OK > rebooted and it is gone. The damn thing wasn't there in add ons so I don't know if it is still lurking somewhere else.

I think what got up my nose was it got in somehow when I tried to get Paint.NET and that sort of creepy behaviour is something that irritates the living heck out of me.
Anyway hope Topper is keeping well and you aint feeding him err her ? junk food

Howdy mate.

Do a scan with your AV and Malwarebytes just to be sure.

For a second opinion if you wish run the ESET online scanner. It sometimes finds bugs others miss.> ESET :: Get a FREE Online Virus Scan
It will take up to 30 minutes to download the database but you can just update it to use at a later date.
The scan will not interfere with your active AV as it is run from on line.
Just a thought if you think necessary.

Ok Hoppy have had a scan running now for half hour and there are 2 threats already - don't know what they are and will do the malwarebytes run and the Eset for good measure in the morning as this scan will take a some while yet.


Oh bit late for Topper to tell me to stay out of trouble - drilled through my left index finger yesterday right under the nail bed and almost out the other side - being a smartass cos I wanted to get the platter off HDD spindle to make some wind chimes and as using the Torx driver didn't work / fit thought I'd drill it - well it didn't quite go to my gung ho plan

Next time, get Paint.NET from Majorgeeks.com. I love Paint.NET, but their website leaves a lot to be desired.

Next time you to uninstall it use the Revo Uninstaller. Use the 'Advanced Option' when running it. That allows you to remove all registry entries and files.

Also it may be a good idea to use WinPatrol. Even the free version warns you about auto starts being installed and BHOs(Browser Helper Objects.) IE BHOs can be very dangerous as they can be ActiveX based and do stuff like mess with files on your system. The only time my system got totally hosed by a Malware it was an IE BHO. After that I don't run IE. I use a simulator to see if my page looks OK to IE users. But I don't run IE itself ever.

When an installer tries to put in a BHO or change the browser start page, WP pops up a confirmation dialog. Just click No.

I had the same experience a few days back when a software that I was trying to install also installed IncrediBar, which is a Browser Hijacker Object. To my horror it promptly hijacked all my browsers and try as I might I just couldn't get rid of it, like you can't "alot".

The day was saved for me by restoring the latest earlier image. I recommend that you do the same. We make images, only to get bailed out of these tricky situations.

Thanks wanchoo yes mate I should have done that and still might because although I haven't seen it rear it's ugly head again maybe it is still lurking somewhere I can't see it.
Thing I find really annoying is that it happened the way it does eh?

Big reason I always keep several system images, and I always make one before installing anything. Even if trusted just in case something may go wrong.

That way, if the worst happens .. a HD wipe and restore will have you up and running just moments before the incident as if it never happened. Sometimes this is just easier than trying to remove whatever it was.

Good habit to get into IMHO, especially if you aren't already.

Well wishmaster we are on the same ~ on that count I have two images and two clones - a bit of overkill I guess but thats OCD for you LOL!!
