Amazing Network Problem.

Hey all, i found this site by mistake, because i was searching for a windows 7 network solution.
Okay, here's my problem.

When i installed the windows, i had no errors, nothing whatsoever. But when i tried to go on the internet 1st it gave me error that i am in Unidentified network, and i could see my step brothers PC on the network, and could go in that drive, copy/paste etc.. but i couldn't access internet. I am constantly getting error with "Wrong IP Configuration."

I got no idea why i am getting this. in IPv4 properties i chose "Assign IPs by default" (or sth like that)

my network submask is 255.255.255.0,
and it assigns me submask of 255.255.0.0 , and i dont know why

anyways here's the screenshot:

I would appreciate help with this.. Cuz i tried EVERY possible things i know about..
Not sure about /flush or /renew in cmd, but i will try that today too..

Thanks...

This usually means that the system is configured to obtain an IP address automatically, but that a DHCP server is not available. Have you tried setting a static IP address (manually set IP address)? You may have to access your router and verify that it is set to assign IP addresses with DHCP.

Umm, I got Router, Netgear DG834G.. When i was on XP, everything was working fine.. And in Properties of the current connection, i had "Obtain IP Address automatically".. and my IP address was 192.168.0.5 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 , IF i select "Obtain IP Address automatically" on Windows 7, I get IP address like 169.174.0.23 and subnet mask of 255.255.0.0.. And when i go Networks that i am in, i see my step brothers PC (can do on his drive, and copy/paste, etc) also i see some PC called Chris-PC, got no idea who is that and i dont have internet... but if i input my IP address manually, to 192.168.0.5 instead of selecting "Obtain IP Address automatically", then i can see my brothers PC on the network and i still dont have internet..

I am really annoyed.. Ive been trying to fix this problem for over 2 days, still cant do it.. -_-'

The IP address starting with 169. is Windows' way to tell you it doesn't find the DHCP server. Quite often the problem is solved by rebooting modem, router and computer. You could try this:

  • power off modem and router
  • wait a minute or two
  • power on modem, wait until all lights are green
  • power on router
  • reboot your computer
Good luck,

Kari

That is an Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address. This is assigned automatically when no static configuration or DHCP server exists.

Try an ipconfig /renew (make sure to run as administrator)

If that doesnt work, check the physical connectons to the router and make sure the cables, etc are not bad.

I'm certain you made a simple mistake when configuring your network connection. Go to your profile and enter your system specs - once you do that, we can help you.

Assign yourself a static ip address.

Make your ip 192.168.0.50
Make the subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Make the default gateway 192.168.0.1
Make the preferred dns server 192.168.0.1

Do this by clicking on local area connection in network and sharing center. Then properties. Then double click the IPv4 line. Enter numbers. Hit ok x2. Then close. Done.

Your computer will like it.

Why would i need to run it as Administrator ?
The account i am on is the only 1 AND its also admin account..
But anyway, should right click the CMD ? and run as administrator ?

I'm certain you made a simple mistake when configuring your network connection. Go to your profile and enter your system specs - once you do that, we can help you.

I did that, i filled them in and it doesnt want to save them, it only saved the OS.. thats all -_-'

The built-in administrator account is hidden. It is not the same thing than the first user account created when installing Windows 7, i.e. in your case your account.

You dont need to run as THE Administrator, but you do need to right-click and choose "run as administrator"

The reason is because you cant run an IPconfig /release or /renew as a regular user.

What you mean list the steps

I installed windows, then the first-est time i went on desktop right after installation, and i had no internet already..

I didnt really take any steps, besides editing the IPv4 properties, and putting manual info like :
Ip 192.168.0.50
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1
Preferred DNS server 192.168.0.1

That did not give me any internet access, however i could see my brothers PC/Drive. Thats all..

P.S. - Do i have to go "Set up new connection or network" after i do those Manual IPs ?
Cuz it asks me for username and password, and i am not sure whether i should enter there my ISP details or whatnot..
