Annoying Keyboard issues

I installed Windows 7 last week. Ever since I am having issues of the calendar/clock window opening, the page randomly scrolling down, a window minimizing or the cursor disappearing whenever I am typing. It happens when I am typing in a search on the internet, typing in my blog, writing an email, commenting on FB or IMing a friend. It has happened several times during typing this post. It is really annoying me. It is obviously some kind of short cut issue but I am not typing any of the known shortcuts while I am trying to do anything I mentioned above. The one shortcut I have identified as causing problems is the space bar. Pressing the space bar caused my browser (or Word doc or whatever) scroll to the bottom. I really just want to put a space in NOT scroll. Is anyone else having this problem? How can I fix it. I can barely type a sentence without something happening that shouldn't.

Sounds like your keyboard (or its driver/controller) is somehow screwed up. Might be something else, but this is the place to start.
1. Go into your Device manager, choose ALL the entries listed under KEYBOARDS and UNINSTALL them. (right click on each entry and choose uninstall.

1a. if your keyboard uses any special software (like logitech (setpoint) or Microsoft (intellipoint) software) you should then unistall that also.

2. you might have to uninstall the USB entries also, but if you choose the wrong one your mouse will stop working (if you are using a USB mouse).

Try 1 AND 1a first (DO BOTH), then restart your system. Windows should automatically then reinstall the keyboard driver.

(see if that fixes your keyboard issue, if it does then install whatever keyboard software you use, if any. If the problem crops back up you can pretty much narrow down the problem to the software.)

If the keyboard still causes problems after the reboot, then you could try uninstalling the USB entries (in the Device manager)... just try not to uninstall the one the mouse is attached to.

That is the first place to start, and the easiest to fix. If that does not solve your problem then we must look elsewhere for the problem.

Thanks for your reply. I just tried the uninstall of the keyboard and restarted but I am having the same problem. My computer is a laptop I noticed an update (in Windows update under 'optional') for the Synaptic PS 2 port touchpad. I assumed it was just for the actual touchpad part of the keyboard which I don't use I use a usb mouse instead but would this driver also be for the keyboard too?

And make sure you have all of those specific drivers installed. Note: these drivers seem to be specific to Windows 7 x64 (as opposed to Vista x64)
These are the OFFICIAL drivers for your notebook, direct from HP.

(if you have already installed these, you might try reinstalling the specific keyboard/touchpad drivers..in case you got a corrupted install the first time.)

Identifying the keyboard problem
Occasionally when typing on the notebook's keyboard, numbers and symbols may replace the letters, resulting in incorrect input to a document and output to the LCD display. Typically, this occurs when the keyboard has been switched to a configuration in which it can double as a number pad.

Test for and correct the keyboard problem
You can manually test which mode the keyboard is set to and change its configuration by following the steps below.

1. Open a word processing program and type the word jump on the notebook's keyboard.
   If the word displays as jump , then the keyboard is set to its default mode. If the word displays as 140* , then the keyboard has been set to a number pad configuration.
2. To switch modes, press Fn + Num Lock .
3. Type jump again to confirm that the keyboard configuration has been reset.

The keyboard's configuration has been successfully reset.

Update the BIOS


Sounds like maybe there is a possible issue with the laptop bios. (before messing with this, I would try everything else first--this should be your last resort. There must be a reason that the last instruction is update the BIOS--but that would be my last resort fix)
