Another Editing Rig: Graphics Card Dilemma?

I've recently started as the IT Assistant for a local media group, so rest assured: this is not a repeat thread about my own rig.

We have one editing guy, and one main editing rig. The HW configuration is as follows:

Corsair HX 850 Semi-Modular PSU
Asus Z97-PRO Mobo
Intel Core i7-4790k CPU
16GB DDR3 RAM (didn't bother looking at specifics, don't care right now)
Nvidia Quadro K2200 GPU
Intel SSD 500GB
2TB Seagate HDD
4TB Seagate HDD
All inside of a Fractal Design Define R4

Aaand that's it. It was built by a local tech company long before I was hired, and so after redoing some of their (horrendous, disgusting, oh-my-gosh-how-in-the-even) work inside the case, I found myself baffled that there was no secondary graphics card for cuda acceleration. This rig is being used to edit 4K footage in Premiere Pro, and I know the guy has experienced hiccups in his video performance before. So, my question is this (because I'm not as totally savvy as I sometimes like to think I am):

Would something like a GTX 970 (or 980, or whatever-have-you) make much of a difference in load spreading to more efficiently work with 4K footage? If so, what recommendations would you have as far as a good card to suit the build without spending an arm and a leg? Remember: lower costs make the boss happy, and more willing to listen to me when I say, "Hey, you really need this."

Hi,
I believe any reference 980 4gb would be fine which are about 500.us :/
Either of the top 2 are good cards seeing as you have a asus board ;)
asus 980 - Newegg.com
I guess this is the one you use now ?
PNY Quadro K2200 VCQK2200-PB 4GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Workstation Video Card - Newegg.com

This one has almost 4 times the cuda cores as the pny even though they both are 4gb cards ;)
ASUS STRIX-GTX980-DC2OC-4GD5 GeForce GTX 980 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - Newegg.com

If too pricy there's the 970

Boss was pressing for a budget-sensitive decision so I went with the 970. Thanks for the recommendations, though. The 980ti would have been my first choice.

With a budget in mind a 980ti is not in that line :)
Just getting one with 256 bit and a lot more cuda cores will suite ;)
That 970 has gsync as well not sure your monitors do though ?

If no budget were in mine the titan line is a better choice for video and audio stuff
Titan x or titan z
But you'd be well over 1k for the x and 1500.00 for the z
EVGA - Products - Graphics - GeForce TITAN Series Family

I sent a Titan x hybrid back it was not in the cards I don't have a 4k monitor or t.v. to take advantage of the features and with the prices of them the titan would be obsolete before I did buy a 4k t.v.

Gsync is one of those things that I've heard of and heard talked about, but still don't really know what it is.

i've done that for 10years, dozens of builds in the 5000$ range.
hit me up, i can provide current blueprints for stable systems. avid & pro tools.
you don't need a big quadro and big render cards. it's either or.

if your boss wants to make money: avid media composer.
i churn out 1 minute of prime tv per hour on that.
