Another post about "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding"

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

This event happens intermittently on some days, in any program, but in particular with Videolan VLC. This is a well known issue with lots of web posts, going back to 2010 and without a definitive method to identify the source.

This is not a gaming computer, and the video card is 18 months old Nvidia GT 620, with the latest Nvidia driver installed, powering a late model LG 21" LCD monitor. I tried three older Nvidia drivers as well, but they didn't help.

I replaced the HDMI cable to the monitor, installed a more powerful power supply. I am sure that this is a Windows 7 problem because this never happens when I boot into Linux Xubuntu, where I am using the generic Xorg Nouveau driver because Nvidia drivers are not nearly as good in Linux as they are in Windows.

Hello inuew mate just out of curiosity what is the RAM usage in Task Manager > Performance showing?? Personally I would be inclined to try upping the RAM to 4GB but thats your call.

ICIT2LOL, Are you a mind reader??? For the past week, I was debating that issue for no particular reason except upgrading the system a bit. It never occurred to me to look at the Task manager and now that I looked at it, I am heading to the store right now because the error popped up again 30 minutes ago.

nvvsvc.exe = 772K

My only concern is that the mother board is nine years old but working perfectly well, and 2-3 months ago when I considered the memory issue, I spent the money on an SSD instead. In any case thanks for the pointer.

ICIT2LOL, increased the RAM from 2 to 4GB but there is no improvement with the video issue. It still registered event error: "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered" with the same inconsistency. This can happen a couple of times in an hour, and then nothing for days.

After installing the RAM, I discovered that the Task manager "nvxdsync.exe" memory use jumped from ~2,000K to ~6,000K and and "nvvsvc.exe" also doubled memory use from ~770K to ~1,400K. After searching the web for info, I discovered that they are not video drivers. "nvxdsync.exe" is the driver helper, and nvvsvc.exe is the Nvidia control panel.

Set the Services Nvidia driver helper to Manual and stopped it. Both processes terminated without any ill effect on the display or Videolan VLC, used for watching videos. If I click the Nvidia settings in the desktop context menu, or in the Control Panel, it starts the Service and the two processes. Since I don't use the Nvidia settings panel, leaving the Service on manual seems like a safe bet. Now just waiting for the next event error - if any.

Well mate that has got me beat why that should happen even though it is only a NVidia control panel thing - have to admit I never use it either as I cannot see the point or advantage and am guessing it is for the fussy gamers.

But at least you have some decent amount of RAM on board.

I suppose it goes before saying you have reseated everything the GPU and plugs and stuff like that? As you say the board is now quite a vintage and maybe time for a makeover
