ants and water

i took 2 big bowls and 2 small bowls

i put sugar in both small bowls

and place both small bowls in big bowls

now i fill one big bowl with water and the other big bowl was empty

the ants came to small bowl which was placed inside empty big bowl

but they didnt bother to goto big bowl which was filled by water

so my question is how does ants know that

one small bowl was surrounded by water on all sides

They use Olfactory Memory outside the nest, whilst foraging.

They also have Avoidance Learning, where they learn unsuitable smells and steer clear of them.

Still, this doesn't prove which smell is the strongest, either the sugar or the moisture.

Instinct, it seems is common sense.
