Anyone have any really good results with the repair install??l

Hi everyone, my Windows 7 pro x64 is playing up abit, random resets, no blue screen, just straight up reset, and also wont play Bluray discs with any program except WinDVD 11, which will only play them in 2D.

Power DVD 11, 12, and Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 5 all cause a reset, sometimes instant, sometimes a couple minutes in.

Is this item in the link below anything like the old repair in Windows XP where it simply removes all the windows files and reinstalls them from the disc, then you need to re do updates and some drivers etc...

The repair in XP was a god send, it worked wonders when i would use it to repair other people's computers and still retain their way of use and most settings.

Does the one for Windows 7 work simular to this??

Has anyone had really good results with it??

It depends. Try uninstalling the ArcSoft and PowerDVD crapware (unless you absolutely need disk labeling which is the only thing Win7 won't do itself).

Since you're obviously struggling with the preinstalled bloatware I would also Clean Up Factory Bloatware to at least immediately establish a Clean Boot which shrugs off all of the freeloaders.

Then run CCleaner Disk and Registry tab, followed by SFC -SCANNOW Command
to see if things improve.

I think it might also be a good idea to scan for viruses/malware.

• Download and install Malwarebytes, update it, do not start the free trial, and then run a full scan. Also run a scan with your favorite antivirus software; if you do not have one installed, install, update, and run a full scan with Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows.

Post back the results of the virus and malware scans.

Im not sure what makes you think im struggling with bloatware?? Im not quite sure what you mean??


I have Avira on here, it finds nothing, and i also have SpyBot Search and Destroy.

I have been disabling all the unrequired start up stuff for a long time, i check it all from time to time, and also when i install new programs to see what starts that doesnt need to.

SpyBot also has a startup section that will tell you what is starting up and gives a description of alot of things.

I keep things pretty clean and tidy, or as far as i know i do, the computer has no speed issues to speak of, it is still quite fast and apart from the bluray issue, there is really no other problems.

Running the SFC, it tells me Windows Resource Prtection did not find any integrety violations. If this is the case, am i safe to assume the repair install would be a waste of time?

The programs you mentioned are preinstalled crapware that comes larded into new consumer computers throttling Win7. I've never heard of anyone buying that mess on the retail market. This is why I mentioned the need to clean up bloatware.

As discussed in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 you should google repeat errors text and identity number to find out how others have resolved them. There are other steps there to use System resources to find and fix problems.

My computer is far from being a consumer computer... Ive never owned one of those. I build all my own and have done for over 10 years.

Why would you think that? I never mensioned that i purchased anything, cause the only thing i have purchased is the Windows 7 Pro x64 disc... That was probably 2 years ago now. Never paid for anything else apart from that and the XP x64 i bought years ago.

There is no "bloatware" on my computer. If you read my specs it is pretty obvious its not a consumer computer with anything preinstalled.

If you know of a way to make Windows 7 run 3D Bluray discs in 3D WITHOUT using one of the programs that is causing my computer to reset it's self, then please share that information with me.

You mentioned ArcSoft and WinDVD11 which both come bundled with some systems. I believe that is where the confusion set in. Also, you say you have not paid for software, so did you get the ArcSoft software and WinDVD11 as part of hardware you bought?

As far as SFC coming back clean, that does not necessarily mean Windows is running as it should. SFC only checks what it was designed to check in terms of system files, and it is not able to tell when there is registry corruption causing Windows to malfunction. Sometimes a repair install will resolve registry corruption but only if the corruption is Windows related and not due to applications installed. There are times when a repair install cannot fix all problems and a clean install is necessary.

Oh ok, i see. I wouldnt have made that assumption myself though, not based on what is written in my system specs. I dont know how hard it is for others to see what ive written there.

No i am using try before you buy versions. Been tried on my friend's computer without the same issues though. I dont usually use any of the software that comes with hardware.

The specs are easy to see. Greg and I both handle a lot of threads, so sometimes we miss the small things. My apologies.

Understand using trial versions. I've been going through all the security programs out there to find one for my family that will be easy to use and provide good security, so I've been doing the 30 day trials of each. Greg was trying to point out that the software you have is not as lightweight as some others that may be available as freeware. We have a list of compiled free software that would take a bit of time to sort through, but maybe Greg can provide some alternatives to what you are using.

Yes, I saw your specs but figured they were for another machine than one which would have those programs since I've only ever saw them preinstalled before. In the past users have wanted to keep them mostly to label disks.

Normally when those programs are present there is a need for bloatware clean-up with problems to be expected.

At the risk of being further spanked I should tell you that no one here recommends Spybot which is old-school. I'd use CCleaner for a Startup interface and excellent clean-up tool, SuperAntiSpyware for state-of-the-art spyware scans, and Malwarebytes for regular malware scans. I've never heard of any problems with Avira.
