anyone here not have a smart phone?

I don't have a smart phone or a dumb phone.
I have a phone at home (land line) that works fine when and if I plug it into the wall socket. Because I have the phone for my convenience I have no answering machine and plug it in when I want to use it.
A lot less noise that way.

My husband doesn't have a smartphone, he's just got one of those big button phones that just send and receive calls, it can text but he can't so that doesn't get used. He just got it for emergencies when out in the car. I can't even remember the last time I put credit onto it, it's a pay as you go, he could probably get away with just putting £10 a year on and probably have credit left over. :p

I have a smartphone even though I don't actually need a mobile, started when my son sent me an LG GT540, I then got myself an HTC Wildfire S, these were all pay as you go, and now I've just been upgraded for a couple of pounds a month more than I was paying on PAYG I got a free Nokia Lumia 520 Windows phone.

Only been playing with it and setting it up since Wednesday but I love it. ;)

You guys that don't have smartphones are definitely spending less money per month but I have no regrets from spending the money for a phone that can make calls but also do much more. There are so many really useful apps out there (lots of frivolous ones too) that make my smartphone indispensable. It's like a Swiss Army knife you carry around in your pocket. It's a phone, music and video player, GPS, camera, flashlight, game console and portable computer. It's also a portable wifi hotspot that lets me provide a fast (to me) internet connection for my laptop, netbook and even my Smart TVs. I have gotten up to 20Mb download speeds from it which is much faster than my home ISP gives me. In fact, when I want to download a large file (like an ISO) I use the phone because a file that would take 5hrs to download via my home connection takes maybe an hour using the phone.

I personally resisted getting a cell phone for a long time but finally gave in and haven't been without one since. The same with my smartphone, I resisted for a long time then finally bought one. I didn't like it at first and seriously considered taking it back but persevered and now wouldn't be without it. I actually feel naked if I leave the house and discover I don't have my phone with me.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
I was probably one of the first on my block to have a smart phone - a Motorola Droid.

Unfortunately, I needed to carry a laptop on business trips to have access to client files. My routine was to answer emails in the evenings, since many came with attachments, and needed the same in return.

So, it wasn't long before I realized that the Droid was redundant, and for me, just entertainment in airports waiting for planes, playing Angry Birds.

Then, when shopping one weekend, the phone rang, I fumbled with it going up an escalator, it slipped out of my hands, bounced down the escalator, slid across a marble floor under a railing, and fell down smack dab in the middle of the fragrance department on the first floor.

As god is my witness, I had no idea there were that many moving parts inside of a smart phone. It exploded like a grenade when it hit the floor.

I replaced it with a LG Cosmos, with an extended battery (easier to hang on to), and a QWERTY keyboard for texting, and I never looked back. After the several years I've had it, it still works fine.

That "explosion" might have been caused by the battery going off (ther than the simple shock of hitting the ground). Lithium batteries are susceptible to such serious shocks and do have a very slight destructive power.
Smartphones have no moving parts, btw.

Yes, I know they have no moving parts, and the "explosion" was just the phone breaking into many pieces. Apparently some of the humor of the situation, and my description of the events, were lost in the translation to Italian. Sorry.
