I read they went through several change in the Operating system.

So is the current Google Chrome based on Linux Ubuntu or Gentoo or some other distro?

Do you like it and how well does it work when your are off line?

as far as I can tell, you can't use Chrome OS unless you buy a chrome based computer, like apple, they are specific hardware enabled OS'es, I think it's sourced from Chromium OS which is Linux Based.

There is a way to crack it and get in on a VM, but I do not see the point. You're essentially using chrome as a OS. Not that much different than just installing chrome on whatever you have now and using it.

There store on chrome os now works across all versions of chrome on any OS, so there is not much point...

I do think chromebooks are great though for the average user, cheaper and does everything they want.

It's different from MacOsX. Chrome OS is open source, so it's totally free to download and use (or even modify as you like) anywhere you want. You can get it here: Get Cr OS Linux - Chrome Plated OS
Android is quite similar too, in fact, both can be run as main systems in any desktop PC if you really want (why is another history).
Mac is different because it's proprietary software and its license explicitly restricts usage to Apple hardware only.

You're essentially using chrome as a OS. Not that much different than just installing chrome on whatever you have now and using it.

If you really want that, it would be much easier to replace the Windows shell with Chrome instead of Explorer

But yes, I agree, it has more value as an experiment rather than some useful purpose.
