Anyway to change system to just turn off on Brownouts?

Been getting a lot of brownouts lately where my computer just quickly restarts after the power goes out for a second. Thankfully, the only problem I've gotten is a "Bugcode_USB_Driver", which I have always fixed by shutting down and removing the power cable for a minute.

Is there a way to have my computer just turn off during a brownout? And if so, would this be better than it instantly restarting?

Not really but it should turn off when the voltage gets too low. To protect the computer it usually is best to invest in a UPS/Uninterruptible Power Supply. It's an always on battery backup useful for an orderly shutdown and is not affected by the short brownouts, power bumps or outages. It provides a limited time depending upon the size you get. A couple of brands I use are TrippLite and APC and I get the highest capacity I can afford at the time.

As for restarting, the BIOS usually has a setting for staying off after a power failure, set by default but can be changed which mostly is useful when doing remote accessing of the computer and not there to start it back up.

How much higher would an electric bill be when using an UPS? I'm sure it's worth it to protect the computer, but just wondering.

And any recomendations on a UPS that would work for my system?

Most any UPS will work in North America on 110-120Volts AC. Other countries or continents have different voltages so a device would have to be for where it will be used. Some or most computer power supplies have a switch for changing from 115 to 220, haven't seen US homes using it. I was just looking at a replacement supply and the box is marked for US, UK, EU, TW, AU, CN, WO and Other, this one is checked as US so it's a universal packing and marked as to which type it contains.

As for power they use, should be an entry on its label as to the maximum power it will draw.

The amount of extra electricity that a UPS would use would really be very little. All they have is a circuit for detecting a drop in supply voltage, a battery charger to keep the battery that keeps the computer operational for short periods during a power outage & a rapid switching circuit to switch in the battery when the power fails. This of course is a very basic description.

Often power brown outs cause voltage surges & spikes that can damage electronic equipment, so it is a good idea to have a good quality surge protector plugged into the wall & the UPS plugged into that & the computer plugged into the UPS.

I use that method & I get a lot of power problems here & it has served me well for over 6 years.

I really can't advise on what would be the best UPS for you as I am in Australia.
