I have an Asus USB-AC51 which is a USB wi-fi adapter.

It comes with a CD with software to install, but I have read reports online that it causes a BSOD on boot!

Also if I look at the Asus web site, the most recent option is a package to download and install, dated 2015-10-19.

I'd prefer to find another solution rather than risk trying this out and then spend time repairing it.

In W10, no installation is needed - I just plug it in and W10 finds a driver, installs and it is ready to go!

The W10 driver that it uses appears to be a generic microsoft windows driver, 5.1.22.0 dated 2015-04-21.

W7-64 cannot find the driver for it. Is there a way to find if there is a generic driver that will work under W7 with this device?

Thank you

Use a search engine ( bing, google, yandex, etc) to search for the device id.

You can find the id under msinfo32 >components>problem devices

device ids look something like this:
PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&REV_06

That ASUS USB-AC51 wireless adapter appears to have a MediaTek/Ralink chipset.

Once you submit the vendor and device codes that SIW2 requested, we should be able to determine the exact chipset it has.

I performed a search and it could be the RT2870U chip.

In one place it seemed to lead to just using the netr28ux.inf in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\netr28ux.inf_amd64_neutral_54f2470c084714e1 ?

I found some other potential drivers to download, but I don't know if they are correct & trustworthy. ie. I don't know any of these sites so I don't know what might have been done with these drivers !

the 17D1 entry needs to be in the netr28ux.inf file.

here is the 17D1 entry in the inf for 6.2 ( win7 is 6.1)

%ASUS_17D1.DeviceDesc% = OS61_RTWLANR_7650_C8.ndi, USB\VID_0B05&PID_17D1
