ATI Radeon HD 6770 awful fonts in Windows browser and reboot problems

I recently upgraded my nVidia 8800GS graphics card to an ATI Radeon HD 6770. I have two problems that I can't resolve.

1. When I reboot (or wake from sleep) the PC refuses to boot, and goes into a sort of start up loop (blank screen but the PC seems to constantly try to restart), which, oddly, is only cured by me pressing the restart button again. Pressing (and sometimes holding) the restart button does not actually reboot my PC but simply only seems to allow my PC to continue (for example, wake from sleep). It's weird. It happens every time. So, I now have to press the restart button several times to get my PC past the POST screen. This has only happened since I replaced the nVidia card with the ATI card.

2. My other problem is ugly (really ugly) fonts in some programs -- including my browsers (Chrome and IE). Also some games (such as Second Life). The fonts look awful. But my windows fonts look OK and Word/Exce/etc are fine. Something odd happened yesterday. The PC suddenly changed fonts, which looked lovely, which lasted about a minute, before reverting to the ugly, washed-out fonts. I didn't do anything to make this happen (or revent back). So, something weird is going on.

I am running the latest version of Windows 7, and the latest Catelyst software, including drivers, and nothing seems to address either problem. It's so bad I am tempted to revert back to the older nVidia card.

Help!

For the first, you remember to uninstall the Nvidia driver and install the latest for the new card?

For the second open CCC and make sure that morphological AA is not enabled,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Stormy.

Neither suggestion worked.

I didn't uninstall the nVida drivers before installing the ATI drivers, but I subsequently installed Windows 8 (Developer Preview) and the problem persisted. This installation (it wasn't a clean install but would not have used the nVidia drivers) was done with my ATI card installed. There is no sign of nVidia drivers anywhere in my system.

Unfortunately, neither did your second suggestion work. That option was not selected - and my fonts (in my browsers and many apps) look crap.

Their appearance has improved by reducing my fonts to 100% (they were previously 150% and 125%) but they still look washed out and hazy compared to the nVidia card/driver.

Maybe ATI fonts are just ugly?

I'm using the same card, but fonts are good enough. I'm posting a screen of chrome (ati website). Are you on HDMI or DVI? Suggestions of sticking to DVI have surfaced when font problems appear on a card.

hdmi can appear quite sharp and ugly, dvi is often softer to look at.

but that said i would uninstall your ati drivers and ensure your nvidia drivers are removed as well, driver sweeper or something similar and reboot and reinstall the ati drivers from the website.
i believe there is a link at the top of this very forum.

there really is no difference between ati and nvidia, it may just be what connection your using and possibly some cleartype settings are slightly off.
