After following this guide, I went ahead and download the latest version of my display driver.

I've got the ATI Radeon HD 3870 just FYI.

When I opened the download and tried to install it, at about 1% of the installation my computer just immediately failed and restarted. I've tried it twice, and it's done the exact same thing both times. Is it that I don't need the upgrade or something? I've made sure to download the exact same driver as the one I have (x32 Radeon 3870)

Thoughts?

A system failure never happens based on whether an update is needed or not. There's something wrong going on here, obviously.

You could try to unpack the .exe install file. Then use the device manager to install it, by pointing to the .inf where you unpacked it to.
