Audio problem

Hello all, my audio was working fine for a year, but a few days ago there was no sound, so I restarted my computer and the sound worked for 30 mins or so then went out.

I checked to see my drivers were up to date and they were. So then I uninstalled the driver and tried to reinstall one from HP but I'm getting an error of cannot find media device etc.

I believe the problem is windows 7 is not detecting my sound device at all therefore I cannot even install a driver for the sound device the pc does not know is even on there.

I've tried to install UAA Bus Driver for High High definition audio, because I read this is required for the pc to detect the sound device in the first place, but i'm getting an "HPQNT.dll failed, reply was FALSE" error.

no sound devices

as you can see there is not "Sound, Video and game controllers" option under the Device Manager anymore.

Also the same time the audio stopped working the HP Quickplay buttons on the keyboard also stopped functioning.

Did anything major change before this happened?

Like a BIOS update or any major applications or games installed?

Have you run a virus/Malware scan?

One thing you can try... get into the BIOS, is the audio/sound option enabled?
If so, disable it, reboot, after windows loads reboot again and enable audio in the BIOS, see if Windows picks it up on the next boot.

Other options.. Could audio have been disabled in services?

Services include both:

Windows Audio
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

hmm thx for reply,

I did install a new game PSO:BB and a week after that the sound problems came, also during this week I've been playing around with the mixer option in sound for the first time, because I wanted to mute the game's sound, I dunno if this contributes to anything.

No recent BIOS Update.

And I'm not sure how to check if the audio/sound is enabled in my BIOS, not seeing the option anywhere,
I got phoenix BIOS, and it's up to date.

Virus scan done, nothing.

Audio services are auto and on.

Did you go back and undo the things you tried above? You could also do a repair install.

tried as well, and not working,

the problem is my computer is not detecting the hardware at all, this could be a hardware problem, or I just need a way to successfully install Microsoft UAA, which will detect the sound device so I can install the drivers etc.

Yes I have.

mm, I've actually got rid of windows 7, and installed a copy of windows xp sp3 on my laptop, I had some trouble getting sound to work on xp for abit but I finally fixed it with the "have disk" forced installation of the audio drivers. Then I created another partition, so I could setup windows 7 on it for a dualboot machine. Surprisingly the audio was working perfect upon entering the clean install, the drivers were all installed and working.
BUT after a day the sound stopped working and I checked the device manager, both microsoft UAA and Conexant hd audio drivers were missing, they are no where to be found even after I've done "show hidden devices". After this happened I rebooted to check the sound on the xp partition, the sound wasn't working on there as well, but on xp when I opened device manager under "show hidden devices" the microsoft uaa and conexant hd audio drivers were listed, but the Microsoft UAA driver says the hardware device is not connected...

Soo i'm guessing i have a problem with a PCI connection on my audio? or something? I'm not really sure how all this PCI bus etc connections work.

Is it an on board sound chip ? If so I am thinking it is failing since you have tried pretty much else.

I believe it is an onboard sound chip,

would I need to replace it? any estimated costs?
