I think the main issue is that people see the word telemetry and they instantly think "Data Mining"! That's not always the case with telemetry, it can actually be a very good and useful thing to collect feedback to improve products. It doesn't necessarily mean that MS is reading people's documents or looking at your photos.

In my opinion, anyone who uses the Internet these days will have more data collected about them than the telemetry patches MS have pushed out to Windows 7/8.1.

So if someone one was beating you with a stick, you wouldn't object if others joined in (even if they only used their fists)?

MS does have a good point that getting people all patched up and with the same system files will probably make testing and future patching a lot easier, both for them and 3rd parties, so I can see their logic on that.

As far as I'm concerned, that is simply a plausible justification to cover what they are really planning to do (just like politicians policies).

MS Will just stop Windows 7 after sometime and they will push them to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.MS bought Minecraft, Skype, etc and thats why Minecraft is paid

I agree with my Ozzy mate.
MS is just waiting to lead us into a false sense of security and then they will start slipping in crappy updates with the rollups and it will start all over again.
Someone said it earlier on in this thread that "something just doesn't seem right!"
MS need to in still some trust back into the Win 7 users, unlike the Australian Gov in this balls up they call the name the person to the census address we are in at the moment. (sorry still angry)

That was exactly my thought yesterday, that the single updates will go smoothly for several months, luring users into a false sense of security, and then a single update will start the chaos!

Usually on my 7 desktop
I don't use that machine much these days plus it can't be upgraded to 10 as the CPU is not compatible.

Hi Mike, yes the Windows 7 Ultimate one, the specs at the end are for my Asus Notebook which came with 8 I upgraded that to 8.1.1 then when 10 came out I upgraded it to 10.

I think it was on the Asus I ran a Virtual machine doing the Insider program of 10 before it came out.

I'll have to go down and look I'm on my Asus at the moment, I'm sure I've got Cpu installed on that machine plus I have the booklet for the board that came with the machine and the CD I think with drivers etc. for it. Back in a bit.

That's OK it's an old machine, it came with Vista installed. I put 7 on after getting the retail version when they did the offer when it first came out.

So did my Acer got a free upgrade to 7 dvd with key for the computer purchase 30 days before 7 was released
Fortunately it had some upgrade options but still not compatible with win-10 fast start but otherwise functions well on 10 and 8.1

It was when I went to reserve the upgrade to 10 on that machine that it went through the check and came back with the message it couldn't be done. It left the icon showing on the taskbar as if you'd get it and whereas on hubbys desktop and laptop clicking on that icon would give you the message that it was reserved and would be upgraded when available, or words to that effect, on my desktop you'd just get the same message that it couldn't be upgraded because the CPU wasn't compatible.

It doesn't worry me as 7 is supported till 2020 and that machine would be ready for replacing probably well before that.

I doubt that is always the case.
MS used define updates this way:

"Updates are classified as Important, Recommended, Optional, and Featured. Here's what they mean:

• Important updates offer significant benefits, such as improved security, privacy, and reliability. They should be installed as they become available, and can be installed automatically with Windows Update.
• Recommended updates address non-critical problems or help enhance your computing experience. While these updates do not address fundamental issues with your computer or Windows software, they can offer meaningful improvements. These can be installed automatically.
• Optional updates can include updates, drivers, or new software from Microsoft to enhance your computing experience. You can only install these manually."

I think things may have changed.

Yea I did install the optional rollup on one machine and it did install net framework 4.6.1 when I had 4.5.2 installed
So when they said the rollups will just install the patches for your existing net framework that is not true

Just as I suspected.

I guess Windows Update will have to be permanently disabled.

Still there is a chance this will be changed.
MS' success rate on Windows updates is so low now, they are likely to wipe out a bunch of (big) businesses who will no doubt cause a big stink when it happens (i.e. cost MS money).

We may have to wait for the EU and a few class action lawsuits to put MS back in its place.

The gap between MS and "Legitimate Businessmen" is shrinking everyday.

Thanks for posting this. It was disappointing but not entirely unexpected. Just too much of a coincidence that the single roll up was announced so soon after the Win10 free upgrade.

I did not install the August roll up and I think for me, if I can't control what is and isn't installed on MY computer, then it will be the end of any updates for me.

If so many computer users have not upgraded to Win10 when it was free, doesn't this tell MS something? Why don't they post on their website a questionnaire asking people why they want to remain with the operating system they use currently. Why don't they simply just ask people instead of trying to ram Win10 onto everyone any which way they can?
