Automated Fix for Windows 7 SP1 Install Failures 0x8004a029, 0x80004005 - E_FAIL

A few months ago Microsoft confirmed that some customers were experiencing issues when attempting to install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7.

Specifically, the software giant pointed out that users were reporting coming across two error messages, namely 0x8004a029 and 0x80004005 - E_FAIL.

The software giant explained at that time that the source of the problem was related to the number of installed network filter drivers. In Windows 7, the quantity of network drivers that can be installed cannot be larger than 14, with a default value of 8.

While I like the fact that Microsoft have produced this automated Fix-It for this Windows Update Error, at my time at this forum, I have only dealt with two of these cases, but hundreds (actually hundreds) of 0x800B0100.

In fact, I myself have created automated tools to fix 0x800B0100 errors. Although the user hasn't actually mentioned the error code, I can tell you now that the error code he is experiencing is 0x800B0100. I have five tools I use to automate Windows Update errors. KB_Extractor is the simplest, and currently only publically released one: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/155584-windows-update-extract-update.html

However, I am about to release several more to the public domain. I did not create that fix by hand. I pasted his log into my program, downloaded the two affected KB .msu files (KB2286198 and KB983590), I dragged them onto the program as well, the internal KB_Extractor extracted them, and a fix was put together and zipped up, dropped into my Desktop\Packs folder, the previous Packs.zip archived, I just uploaded that file (and it has learned to default to my Packs folder!)

I am about to release that tool to some VIP members.

However, my most exciting tool, is an automated fix for 0x800B0100 on an OP's machine, which uses WSUS to download the required KB .msu/.cab files, extracts them, gets the required files, puts them into the correct directory, and runs System Update Readiness Tool (SURT). (The reason I run SURT is that although it takes longer, it is much, much safer, and with a good bit of testing, I believe that it is perfectly safe to use this tool in combination with SURT's checking of the files)

I know that I have missed most of the SP1 rush, but I will be massively hot off the mark with any Windows 8 trends in error codes, and this is a good test.

That is to come soon - now, why haven't Microsoft made that tool?
