Black screen after sleep mode--why?

I'm not sure if this counts as a crash, but please bear with me here.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCSB11FX/W laptop. I lock the screen (it's password protected too) and close the lid when I need to get up to do something else while using it. Usually, the blue Windows 7 lock screen shows up when I open the laptop, but just now, I got a black screen that wouldn't respond to any buttons, so I shut the laptop down manually by holding down the power button. When I booted up and logged in, I got the old 'Windows was shut down unexpectedly' message.

Just curious, why did I get the black screen? Also, the power button was green, which means it wasn't in sleep mode at all, and the laptop's fan was whirring loudly too. This has happened to me a couple of times before, and I usually wait at least 30-60 seconds for the black screen to respond before shutting down, though the fan makes a louder noise the longer I wait. This happened even though the lid was closed properly. I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice on how to prevent this from happening in the future, please and thank you.

I still recommend following the http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-debugging/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html if you have had blue screens in the past. You said you usually get a blue screen during these circumstances, and those are the best method to determine why sometimes you also get the black screen. It is highly likely the behaviors are related to each other, and this behavior usually indicates a Bug Check 0x9F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE crash.

@s2323: he said it usually goes to the normal blue *login* screen.

My freshly installed Win7 laptop does this as well. The login prompt is there, just the screen stays faded-out. About half the time if I log in (ctrl-alt-delete, password, Enter) then it recovers, but if not, I can go into standby again, back out, and do that again.
Returning to standby alone never recovers the display, and locking and unlocking (using keyboard shortcuts) does not recover it; only returning from standby and logging in. Sometimes two tries (the screen will come back then fade black again.)

This is a defect with the fade-out-fade-in switching from the Desktop to the Locked screens, as once, maybe twice now I have locked then unlocked the screen and it stayed dark. I don't yet know how to fix it, but above is a usable, if tricky, workaround.

I hope someone is still here monitoring the site! My issue is similar, but different. Of course. First of all, I have NO sleep mode/stand by at all anywhere in any options.



Secondly, if I try to put the laptop into hibernation mode, it acts as if it's going into hibernation mode but never does. It blackens the screen and locks up the computer. I can't do ANYTHING with it. No keys work, no combination of keys work, so it's impossible to get back to a working screen. Thus, I have to shut it down by holding the power button down. Then of course when it restarts it goes to the screen giving you the option of trying to fix it or Start Normally, which I do, and the machine is up and running again just fine.


Any ideas what in the world is going on and why? Is it a BIOS problem???


This is an HP dv6 2155dx laptop with 8GB RAM and is a fresh install. I did set up MS Office 2110 in it and that's it. I had quite a time getting Office activated so I don't want to jeopardize that!



I built this machine because I work with a lot of music and video files and I got really fed up with the Windows Explorer in Windows 10 never working properly- green bar creeping across the top and never finishing, unable to use "Open With", etc, and the constant issue with it not charging the battery. I have to go through a rigamarole just to get it to charge the battery. It would charge it up quite fast, but would not maintain the charge and the battery would go completely flat until Win 10 couldn't even find it!


Enter Windows 7 again and those issues disappear, but instead now I have this Sleep/Stand by and Hibernation problem. I sure hope someone knows what to do with it so I can get it running correctly!
