brand new external drive not showing up (not even in disk management!)

I bought a brand new U12-43837 Ultra 500GB external hard drive but as soon as I hook it up to the computer, the computer recognizes the drive, installs the driver, makes the hardware insert sound, but the drive does not appear in My Computer, nor does it appear in Disk Management. A few threads on here say to do certain things with the drive in Disk Management i.e. change drive letter, but the drive doesn't even show up in Disk Management so I cannot do that. Where do I go from here?

From a search this looks like just an enclosure and does not come with a hard drive inside it already = sold separately :/

I put a hard drive into it. After further research, I found out that it is showing up as Removable Drive, and not a hard drive. And I cannot get it to recognize as a hard drive. I have no option to format the drive. I suspect an unformatted HDD

What size drive 500gb ?
Your system might just be slow to initialize the drive for use ?

Are you positive the HDD you have put inside the enclosure is healthy and working? You could try it separately just to make sure. If the drive works when connected internally but doesn't when connected via the enclosure, then perhaps the enclosure itself is faulty.

Make sure you have your drivers (USB and drive) updated. Is the drive empty? If so, right click in Disk Management and Initialize, partition, format it and assign a drive letter.

I tried another 500 GB hard drive that was taken out of a home surveillance system that I know works and now I have another problem. it still doesn't show up in Disk Management, instead Device Manager has a yellow triangle by "USB Mass Storage Device" with the message "This device cannot start (code 10)" I tried uninstalling the driver and letting Windows reinstall it, I tried making a custom usbstor.inf as another website indicated. There doesn't seem to be much information or related posts on the internet regarding "This device cannot start" message when talking about USB hard drives. the stuff that Google did pull up were not fixed and dated as far back as 2007.

This is a second known-working HDD in that enclosure? It looks like the enclosure itself isn't working.

I would suggest you trying to use a USB to SATA adapter to connect the drives externally. Also, separately look in your Device Manager for any general USB drivers you may be missing.
