Browsers dont work after windows 7 updates

I've just done a fresh install of windows 7. And IE worked at that point. Then, I did the Windows update, downloaded, and installed about a hundred updates. After that, IE stopped working, and gave the following error message.

The device or resource is not set up to accept connections on port https

I'm trying to get IE working after the Windows 7 updates.

Help!

Note, I used system restore to undo the updates, and get to this page.

I'm not sure that I know what could have gone wrong, but I do have a few questions for you.

Did you use a DVD from the manufacturer of your computer to do this fresh install?
Or did you use a retail W7 DVD?

Did the DVD already have service pack one installed?
