Running Asus laptop, x53U. Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit, 8GB Physical memory. Fully patched (Windows) except for IE11 which is being dealt with in separate thread. Radeon HD 6290 ( AMD C-60 APU with Radeon)

Running latest BIOS from Asus. Updated ATI drivers to latest on ATI site. Shut off Graphic Acceleration.Set pagefile to zero, reboot and restored pagefile allowing Windows to select size. Ran sfc /scannow, no errors in any validations. Not sure how to shut off Hibernation. I shut it off in Power management Plan but this morning it awoke from Hibernation. (ATI CCC has its on power options for entire device, no hibernation option that I could find.)

Symptoms. If I press F1 (Sleep) device goes to sleep. When I awake it, mouse, space bar, shows black screen, then mouse cursor on black screen, then black screen and then BSOD. (This description is on the web from several users.) Error indicates atikmpag.sys with error code 0x00000116.

I can put it to sleep with Windows, (Start Orb, shutdown button, select Sleep). I can awake with power button and successfully login.

All USB devices, external drive, mouse radio removed same results.

Best options on web seem to be live with it and press power button. Saw one where I should re expand atikmpag.sys file. This error happened on old drivers and right after installing new drivers. Can't see how new file has become corrupt.

BIOS (to UFEI) has limited options. Usually there are some power options but none present.

I found a hotfix KB958685 which relates to sleep issues on numerous laptop. It fixes an issue where if sleep is induced by closing lid the machine will BSOD. While pressing F1 is not closing the lid it is similar in that I am using Hardware controls, F1 or lid closing, to invoke sleep.

Was thinking I would install KB958685 but thought it would be prudent to ask the experts before I do something I shouldn't have done.

There is also a chipset update on Asus but given I've updated video driver I am hesitant that an older vid driver is bundled in package.

Thoughts. KB958685? Asus Chipset Driver? Others?

Will running this test in any way damage the machine. This is not my laptop and I understand the graphics are integrated into the CPU. I could be wrong.

Does it make sense that the machine will sleep with windows and awake with power button but crash when using F1 to sleep and a keyboard key to awake? There must be a subtle difference in the way windows is put to sleep.

Would be interested in your response. Have to help someone move today and then I can investigate test. Thanks for responding.
