Solved BSOD playing Total War: Shogun 2

Hello People of Seven Forums,

Hopefully someone could help me with this:

While I was playing Shogun 2 a wild blue screen appeared after a minute of buzzing noise like in a freeze.
I don't have much information about the blue screen since I looked at it for a couple of seconds and then tried to restart windows again.

screen says ''Starting Windows'', but with no logo.
After that it says ''Windows is loading files'' and Startup Repair appears.
after that ''Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically''

I tried System Restore, but that did not work.
Safe mode doesn't work either.

System Specs(as far as i know, because i cant look into them anymore):
Asus K53S
Geforce GT 540M 2GB
Intel Core i7-2630QM, 2.0GHz
Memory 4 GB
WIN 7 Premium
HDD 500 GB
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Never had this before. My Notebook is a half year old, never had any problems with it.
Is there a way to fix this without losing to much files? I've got a lot of important work saved on my laptop.

I have now completed Memtest86 without any errors.
I will now proceed with the hddiag.

is there a way to boot the hard drive diagnostic trough USB?
Booting from CD is not an option since I cannot burn cd's.

There are ways, but it's beyond my ability to tell you how to do it.
I use the USB boot thingie from here: YUMI - Multiboot USB Creator (Windows) | USB Pen Drive Linux
and then I upload the .iso file to the USB stick and let it boot it from the thingie above.

Haven't had any luck yet. cant find a solution.
Is it possible to re-install windows While keeping all of my files?

You can backup your files to an external drive (or to another partition) and reinstall Windows.
But, if the hard drive is bad, you'll just be wasting your time.

Maybe you can borrow a computer to burn a hard drive test onto a CD?

I have Tried the HDdiag, Seatools for DOS, long test, it went to about 78 erros at 10%. When I came back the program had a freeze. After that I tried The short test which passed without errors
I am currently trying to redo the long test, hoping it will finish without freeze.

The short test isn't very accurate - while the long test is. I strongly suspect that the hard drive is bad and that you'll have to replace it before continueing.

It finally completed the long test with 93 errors.
All errors were repaired. Startup repair worked. And everything is back to normal it seems.

At work if the drive has errors we never fix them - we just replace the hard drive.
We do this because it's very likely that the drive will develop errors again shortly.

So, the point is that you should:
- keep your stuff backed up, as you don't know when/if the drive will fail on you.
- consider replacing the hard drive as a precaution before it dies.
