welcome to the forum.

do you have a windows 7 installation disk or back up disk that came with the laptop. if so restart the computer and hold R. this should initiate the windows recovery program. from there just follow the steps, and it should repair any start up issue that are amis.

I cant think of a reason why it wouldnt boot in safe mode.

Does the computer crash, or do you still have mouse movement? and new software change before hand?

I'm having a similar problem. It loads to the Windows 7 Home Premium screen and then stops. Normally, there is a login box, but it's missing. I've tried loading in all the various safe modes, tried LKGC, Startup Repair and System Restore. Nothing works. Startup Repair said there were no problems and the OS was booting normally. System Restore didn't work. I had 3 recent updates to restore back to. All failed.

I got this on one of them....

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.
Details:
System Restore failed while scanning the file system on the drive D:\
The drive might be corrupt. You might want to retry the System Restore after running chkdsk /R on this disk.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070057)

I tried to run chkdsk /R but it failed.

I don't understand most of what I"m reading on these forums. I'm not a techie person, my husand built the machine. But he doesn't know what to do to fix this either.

I have a full days worth of drawing files I don't want to lose on my hard drive. Please help! Thank you!

Also, I realized after trying to reboot, that the corner of a folder on my desk was holding down the ESC key. Was that way all during the reboot. That's what happened right before i had this problem. Would that mess something up?

Getting your files back won't be an issue, either pug the hdd directly into another pc, or buy a 3.5" sata caddy and then plug it into a laptop or pc.

This is why when people tell you to back things up you should lol

I've seen on other posts where they suggested plugging the hdd into another pc in order to download data. So, where does the OS live if not on the hdd? How does plugging the hdd into another pc bypass the OS?

I have Carbonite that backs up nightly. Unfortunately, this happened between backups. Guess I need to reconsider letting it run continuously.

no the OS is on the harddrive, but plugging it into another computer as a slave drive uses the other computers OS system.
All it is doing is accessing the files on your drive. if you plug it into another computer and is the only HDD attached it will do exactly the same as what happens with your computer.

Thanks for the info!

Any ideas if the ESC key being pressed during booting would cause a problem?

holding the esc key when its just about to boot into windows stops any programs from starting on start up.

for example my paint mixing machine at work boots straight to the full screen mixing software, holding esc makes it stay at desktop

They USED TO BE FREE but no more.:sarc:

The recovery disk of which you speak - can I build one or do I have one given that I have an operational desktop with Windows 7 Home Edition 86x.

recovery disks, repair disks, boot disks, iso images, back up files, so many methods, so much to learn

I hope this ole man has time enough to grasp all of this.

People normally always suggest virus's as a last resort.. the thought process goes "hardware failure>drivers>user error>virus>work of the devil" lol
