Can HP charger be used for Gateway laptop?

I thought I made a mistake once but it turns out I was wrong.

Gregrocker make sure the polarity is correct on the plug or bad things might happen. A slight difference in voltage probably won't hurt anything. The laptop is going to filter it and regulate it some more anyway. If he doesn't have a battery in his laptop I wouldn't worry about the current rating being a little lower either. Whats listed is worst case scenario, laptop on and charging the battery. I have an old power pack from a dead Acer Laptop. It has the same voltage rating as the one that came with my Acer Aspire 5920 but a slightly lower current rating. It doesn't get as hot as the original power pack that came with laptop. I keep it as a spare and just leave it in my laptop carry bag. I do use it from time to time and don't worry about it. The original manufacturer power packs should be overload protected anyway.

I would have to say that some generics must include this chip as well, because the generics I have gotten courtesy of eBay that were definitely not Dell OEM chargers, do in fact, charge the battery. One of the laptops has even moved on to a generic battery, but the generic charger can charge that just as well. Normally, I wouldn't recommend using either as a generic, but this person didn't have much cash to spare, and now the laptop is basically just a backup.

What does a laptop see from a charger. Polarity, amps, volts, watts. If it plugs in and meets those conditions I still don't understand why it doesn't work.
