can I boot from a smaller drive and use a larger one as my primary?

interesting to know the outcome of that one mate, would still like to use the larger hdd for my main accounts so hopefully it can be done!

I know it can be done. once you've installed windows 8, you can tweek registry, then create a new account, and all the users data, (documents, downloads, dekstop, etc etc will be on the bigger hdd.

I just dont know, if it will carry the settings over, if i upgrade.

Got a feeling it will corrupt my user profile.

Stay away from messing with the Registry unless you know what you are doing. Do the install of Win 8 and go over to the Windows 8 Forum and they can tell you how to do things without messing with the Registry. You are only asking for trouble.

this issue was solved by performing a clean install, all seems well so far. as for migrating my profile i will ask on the 8 forums

No problem.

If you perform the Windows 8 UPGRADE - then it will move across all your settings, users and data. and most programmes, It will tell you what it can not move across, due to compatibility

the update has been done, i did not move anything across, i backed up what i needed and just clean installed, avoided carrying over any of the problems.
