Solved Can I create and use a Hibernate partition ?

From what I've read and know, I always believed the Windows Hibernate file must be on the partition. In this thread it seems there can be a "Hibernate Partition" (for a Dell OEM PC): [URL]http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/355437-have-too-many-partitions-dual-boot-windows-10-a.html[/URL] Can I setup a "Hibernate Partition" and remove the hiberfil.sys file from [C], and still use hibernate ? My Test Box is a triple boot, and if I can create a single Hibernate Partition that would work for all 3 Windows OSs, that would be cool. Only one OS is hibernated at the same time. I have a home-built PC. For me this would be a fun thing to play with...to see if I can get it to work. How does Dell do this, and can I do it on a home-built ?

I don't know how or if what you want can be implemented. I do know that the ability to do this is hardware dependent and requires software supplied by the hardware manufacturer.

But be aware that after hibernating an OS when later powering on the system it will boot directly into the hibernated OS with no option to boot to any other. There is a very good reason for this restriction. When in hibernation the hibernation file (or partition) and all files (except network or removable) that the OS accessed are part of the system state. If any of these files were modified by another OS the hibernation state would be inconsistent with the risk of data loss or corruption.

I'm not sure how Dell does it since they have not moved the Boot loader to the 8gb Hibernation partition they've added. Maybe they have included in that partition the driver that loads the Hiberfile early in process. We could ask the OP for hidden System files content on that partition.

I'm sure my Test Box wouldn't be able to do this.
It's old hardware and there is no longer any support for the Motherboard.

Reading the link Greg posted it seems others have tried to figure this out but never succeeded.
That link and everything else it led me to makes me realize how difficult it is ...

Greg, if you think getting the hidden System Files content from Dan653 might offer a possible solution I'm game to try it.
Like I said, for me this could be a fun thing to do, but I see it's too complicated for me...I would need your help setting this up.
It's certainly not anything needed asap, or important to fix anything broken etc.

It might be interesting to see what they need to load on to the Hiber partition to get it to function at boot as it must according to that Sysinternals thread. Given that it confounds as to how it cannot also be the boot partition.

He'd need to add a drive letter temporarily to have a chance to see those files.

It's interesting because after researching it I suggested to OP that the time to get rid of it might only be at reinstall based on the logic that if he wiped the drive then a modified hiberfile location couldn't survive unless it also entails a BIOS setting. So that might be the next thing to check.

Of course the Dell forums thread where it was insisted that deleting the Hibernate partition would disable the Recovery partition and possibly its boot function, could be only speculation and not official company word. There isn't much else on it I found browsing the results for deleting Hibernation partition. I'm thinking its rare because I've not seen it before at all.

Not sure if he will return, or be willing to make such a change ...

I think I'll search around the Dell support and see if I can find any info about this ...
I'm not sure if Dell would even share such info though.

I can look through my BIOS but I don't remember ever seeing some setting that would allow this.
This MB is an Abit, and they got out of the MB business years ago.
It doesn't even support AHCI (but it does support RAID).

I see you posted while I'm writing this.
Guess you already searched Dell forums about this.

I found the Hibernate Partition is used for Intel Rapid Start Technology (not available on my motherboard).
