It won't shorten it appreciably. All HDDs will wear out over time, and all SSDs will fail. It's just the nature of the hardware.

They key is regular backups of your data, and system images of your hard disks to reinstall when the inevitable happens.

I guess most here has at most 100Mb/s. That makes 12MB/s and internal HDDs can read at 90-100MB/s (sequential). So, it will not impact the performance of your game. Not by much at least.

Hard drives in a busy server, that differ little from yours, work harder than that with rarely a break. Many drives that are lightly used fail quickly while others that are worked hard live for years. And the reverse.

Other than physical abuse the worst thing you can do with a hard drive is to never back it up. A hard drive can fail at any time, often without warning or apparent reason. I saw one of my own drives go from working fine one day to being unrecognized by the BIOS the next morning.

You can backup to the same HDD but that's not really a good idea. Best is to backup to a separate HDD preferably external (in case PSU burns the internal HDDs).

You can use Macrium Reflect free - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/73828-imaging-free-macrium.html

You would need another HDD, and restore your backup to it with regular imaging. However, if you clone the drives you can just plug the clone drive in and it will work. Imaging is a better method. It doesn't take very long if you set things up correctly.
