Can I Install Office 2016 alongside Office 2007 without conflict?

Hi Folks,

The title of the thread says it all really.

I have legitimate copy of Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate on my PC. I have just bought a copy of Office 2016 Professional Plus through the HUP.

I haven't installed Office 2016 yet - I use Office 2010 at work and find using Custom Animations in PowerPoint tricky compared to Office 2007.

I'd like to install Office 2016 alongside Office 2007 until I have tried Office 2016 to see if the Custom Animations in PP are easier than the 2010 version before switching completely.

My question is, can I install Office 2016 alongside Office 2007 without conflicts - switching between versions without a problem or will installing Office 2016 screw Office 2007 or worse FUBAR both Office installations or my PC.

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers,

Zaph

If Office 2016 will let you specify a different directory than your present Office 2007 directory -- it just might work! I have not done such a double MS Office install, and therefore do not have a success history concerning double MS Office installs. Now, I have been successful in having both Lebre Office and Apache's Open Office installed and working together, so the Idea of double install is often a good one.
Do you have at least two full images of your OS partition on at least one if not two external hard-drives?

@ZaphodB. Nothing is ever guaranteed to work. The only thing is install Office 2016 & see how you go.

A lot of people run 2 versions of Office & have no problems, while others do seem to have problems.

As far as I know you can only have one version of Outlook installed & looking at the Microsoft website below it seems like it has to be the later version of Office.

Both versions have to be either 32 bit or 64 bit you have one 32 bit & one 64 bit.

So read through these websites & follow the links.

It should work, but BTW backup first your Os.
During install choose to mantain old Office , it would ask you ... to overwrite or mantain ...

Thanks for the responses guys.

@Ranger4 I'm not sure what you mean by the following "Both versions have to be either 32 bit or 64 bit you have one 32 bit & one 64 bit."

My OS is Win 7 HP Sp1 is 64-bit and from what I can establish it looks like I installed the 32-bit version of Office 2007. Are you saying that the install of Office 2016 should also be 32-bit to match Office 2007 or 64-bit to match the OS? Also, is there any way of checking for sure which version of Office (32 or 64-bit) I have installed?

With MS Word running in Word Options > Resources > About > System Information > Software Environment > Running Tasks it reports winword.exe to be in c:\program files (x86) which is what leads me to suspect that I installed the 32-bit version.

I don't use Outlook - at least not on my home PCs so if I have the option (not sure/can't remember) NOT to install Outlook in the Custom Setup, then I'd look at doing that.

I do maintain HDD images for re-installation should a HDD fall-over. The current HDD is itself an image of the original (and smaller) HDD on what was a new PC (but after the installation of Office 2007).

I also back up documents/photos etc to a third external HDD (actually two - O.O ).

This HDD has not been used for a while, so I guess that I'd better pop it back into the PC and go through all of the Windows Updates first (might take a while!)

I can then swap them back over again and then have a bash at Installing Office 2016.

Once again, thanks for your responses. It will be a few days before I can get on with this as I have my youngest daughter's wedding to get out of the way first!

Will update this thread once I have had a crack at installing Office 2016.

Cheers,

Zaph

Oh dear I did slip up there, sorry:o, that should be "you CAN'T have one 32 bit & one 64 bit". What version Windows is does not matter. I run Office 2013 Pro 32 bit on Windows 7 64 bit.

As you already have Office 2007 32 bit installed, you would need to install the 32 bit version of Office 2016.

Check that Windows & Office 2007 are fully updated beforehand.

I know you what you really meant to post :) was:
"...My youngest daughter's wedding is coming up, a wonderful event capturing my full and undivided attention! After that Event, I shall return to this mundane, hum-drum, Office conundrum and update youse all..."
Give your daughter and son-in-law Best Wishes and Congrates from all of us :) :)

Microsoft did not offer a 64 bit version of Office until Office 2010 so you can be sure that the version you installed of Office 2007 is 32 bit.

I know that 2007 and 2013 worked together on one system - if that is a clue.
